Gory Popeye Storyboards Spill the Beans on Factory Massacre

Producers of the cult horror hit Popeye the Slayer Man have unveiled a series of grisly art boards teasing some of the film’s most shocking moments ahead of its Prime SVOD debut in late July. Rendered in stark monochrome with splashes of crimson, these graphic boards offer a raw, behind-the-scenes glimpse of Robert Michael Ryan’s visceral slasher.

One sequence depicts a group of friends stumbling into an abandoned spinach-canning factory, their silhouettes illuminated by flickering overhead lights. The artwork captures the moment they realise that the local legend of the ‘Sailor Man’ is far more real than myth. In another frame we see a severed arm, the bone grisly and exposed, lying beside discarded cans of spinach. A close-up board focuses on a tube of the titular green paste, now tainted and ominous, its contents dripping like congealed blood.

Perhaps most unsettling is a storyboard showing the rampaging Sailor Man – a hulking figure in a sailor’s cap – lifting a victim above his shoulder like a sack of potatoes before crushing her skull in brutal fashion. The accompanying stills underscore the film’s commitment to practical effects inspired by 1970s and ’80s grindhouse horror. Special makeup by R.J. Young is on full display in sketches of faces torn apart, while cinematographer Korey Rowe’s compositions are captured in bold lines and deep shadows.

Director Robert Michael Ryan said, “We’re thrilled we can make the film available to UK audiences on Prime, as well as on Amazon and Apple. We went old-school with this movie, using practical effects reminiscent of the classic horror films of the ’70s and ’80s. Popeye the Slayer Man is camp, chaotic, and made with a lot of love for both grindhouse horror and the worldwide cultural icon that is Popeye. For those who like their horror intense, bloody, and a bit unhinged, we hope it hits like a can of contaminated spinach.”

Also released alongside the art boards is a suspense-laden promo clip that ratchets up tension with jarring sound design before erupting in a hail of violent action. Viewers catch glimpses of Meathead – played by Jason Robert Stephens – his pipe clenched between teeth as he stamps through the factory’s Rust Belt corridors clutching a cleaver, followed by rapid cuts to his victims’ terrified faces. The clip promises a feverish cat-and-mouse chase that culminates in scalping, eye-popping gore and the twisted head of an unlucky explorer.

Casting announcements include Jason Robert Stephens in the title role alongside Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas and Steven McCormack. “Scream queens” Angela Relucio and Sarah Nicklin add genre credence, and fans are already speculating whether a sequel could greenlight an even more monstrous return. Discussions are reportedly underway to bring back the Sailor Man in a new chapter of mayhem.

With its SVOD launch on Prime fast approaching, Popeye the Slayer Man is poised to infect late-night watchlists with a jolt of unhinged, analogue horror bravado.
