‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ Returns for a 35th Anniversary Cinema Event

Thirty-five years after redefining blockbuster cinema, James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day is heading back to the big screen for a global anniversary celebration, giving audiences another opportunity to experience one of the most influential action films ever made in 4K, RealD 3D and premium cinema formats.

Studiocanal, Fathom Entertainment and Rialto Pictures have announced that the landmark sci-fi classic will return to cinemas worldwide this autumn, with UK and Irish audiences able to revisit the film from 4 September. The anniversary release will use Studiocanal’s acclaimed 2017 4K restoration and 3D conversion, presenting the film in one of its most comprehensive theatrical presentations to date.

First released in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day transformed the action genre through its ambitious visual effects, large-scale set pieces and memorable performances from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick. The film went on to win four Academy Awards and remains one of the highest-grossing and most celebrated science fiction films ever produced, holding a 90% critics’ score and 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

To coincide with the anniversary announcement, a new trailer and commemorative poster have also been unveiled.

Reflecting on the re-release, director James Cameron said: “T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film. I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.”

Anna Marsh, CEO of Studiocanal and Chief Content Officer of CANAL+, described the release as an important milestone in the company’s continuing restoration programme.

“We are incredibly proud to mark the 35th anniversary of James Cameron’s masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” she said. “The continued restoration and discovery of classic and revolutionary cinema is the cornerstone of our strategy, and it’s particularly gratifying to see the scale of this celebratory re-release come to fruition.”

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The story follows Sarah Connor as she attempts to prevent the coming apocalypse while protecting her son John from the relentless T-1000, a shape-shifting machine sent back through time to alter humanity’s future. Standing between them and extinction is a reprogrammed Terminator, played by Schwarzenegger in one of cinema’s defining action roles.

The anniversary screening also reflects Studiocanal’s ongoing investment in preserving classic cinema. Since 2020, the company has committed €25 million to restoring around 1,000 films in 4K, ensuring landmark titles continue to be experienced on the big screen rather than solely through home viewing.

Tickets in the United States for Terminator 2: Judgment Day 35th Anniversary will be available online on July 17 and at participating theatre box offices (theatre locations are subject to change).
