‘Eyes Wide Shut’ Finally Gets UK 4K Release After 27 Years

More than a quarter of a century after it first arrived in cinemas and sparked endless debate, Eyes Wide Shut is preparing to re-emerge in a format that may reveal new details within Stanley Kubrick’s meticulously crafted final work. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that the provocative 1999 drama will receive its first ever UK 4K Ultra HD release this summer, bringing one of cinema’s most discussed late-century films to audiences in high dynamic range for the first time.

Eyes Wide Shut

Available from 27 July 2026 as a limited 4K Ultra HD SteelBook edition, the release marks a significant moment for admirers of Kubrick’s filmography. Often regarded as one of the director’s most enigmatic works, Eyes Wide Shut was released just months after Kubrick’s death and remains the final chapter in a career that reshaped modern filmmaking through titles such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining.

Adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Traumnovelle, the film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as Dr William Harford and his wife Alice, a seemingly content married couple whose relationship begins to unravel following a candid discussion about desire, jealousy and fidelity. What follows is an increasingly surreal journey through New York’s affluent social circles, where William finds himself drawn into a secretive and unsettling underworld.

Alongside Cruise and Kidman, the cast includes Sydney Pollack, Vinessa Shaw and Rade Šerbedžija, while Jocelyn Pook’s haunting score has become inseparable from the film’s dreamlike atmosphere. Even now, there is something oddly difficult to categorise about Eyes Wide Shut. It is a psychological drama, certainly, but it also drifts into territory that continues to fascinate horror and thriller audiences decades later.

The new edition arrives with a substantial collection of bonus material. Among the newly included features are the Channel 4 documentary The Last Movie: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut, the featurette Lost Kubrick: The Unfinished Films of Stanley Kubrick, an interview gallery featuring Cruise, Kidman and Steven Spielberg, and Kubrick’s 1998 Directors Guild of America D.W. Griffith Award acceptance speech. Original trailers and television spots are also included.

For many viewers, the appeal of this release may not simply be the improved image quality. Kubrick’s famously precise compositions often reward repeat viewings, and perhaps that is why Eyes Wide Shut has endured. Certain scenes feel entirely clear one moment and strangely elusive the next. That quality has helped sustain discussion around the film for more than 25 years, even among those who disagree about what it ultimately means.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment will release Eyes Wide Shut on 4K Ultra HD SteelBook in the UK on 27 July 2026. Catch your copy before they’re gone!
