Nocturna: Side B – Where the Elephants Go to Die (2021) Review

Having recently watched (and cried a lot over) Nocturna : Side A – The Great Old Man’s Night, it seemed appropriate to follow up with the accompanying ‘Side B – Where The Elephants Go To Die’.

Side B has a run time little over one hour and whilst has a different perspective of the same story, is stylistically quite different. Shot in a different aspect ratio to Side A, Side B instead provides artistic snippets of the characters introduced in the former accompanied by a poignant monologue of reflections on time, memory and death.

With a tone of abstract experimentalism, Side B wouldn’t necessarily work as a stand alone piece. It doesn’t feel like a ‘follow up’ as such to Side A – more of an accompaniment, like a recommended wine pairing with a meal – enhancing what has been tasted. Side B is probably an acquired taste, but does have an eclectic charm to it – particularly for those with an interest in filmmaking.
