‘Four Flies on Grey Velvet’ Returns in Stunning Ultra HD

Dario Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet returns with renewed visual menace and psychological unease this month, as Shameless Films brings the giallo classic to 4K UHD and Blu-ray on 28 April. Often overshadowed by its more widely celebrated successors, this final entry in Argento’s early ‘Animal Trilogy’ now gets the restoration it has long deserved, complete with Dolby Vision HDR and a host of newly unearthed special features.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet

Originally released in 1971, Four Flies on Grey Velvet finds celebrated rock drummer Roberto Tobias, played by Michael Brandon, drawn into a surreal spiral of paranoia and death. After accidentally killing a stalker, Roberto becomes the unwilling target of a mysterious figure who seems to be toying with him. As the bodies pile up and reality starts to fracture, the only clue lies in an image reportedly captured on the retina of a dying victim. Equal parts murder mystery, psychological fever dream, and philosophical study in guilt, the film’s approach remains bold even by Argento’s standards.

Argento himself describes the film as one of his most personal, leaning into psychoanalysis and his own nocturnal terrors to craft something that feels as much like a confessional as it does a thriller. In newly recorded interviews for this edition, both Argento and Brandon speak candidly about how the director poured his own fears into the film, seeing Brandon’s character as something of a surrogate for himself. The results are unsettling, visually audacious, and unmistakably Argento.

This new restoration is sourced directly from the original camera and sound materials, supervised by Argento’s longtime cinematographer Luciano Tovoli, ensuring that the film’s atmosphere, which is already drenched in soft-focus dread and surgical red lighting, has never looked sharper. Ennio Morricone’s moody, melancholic score floats above the film like a ghost, haunting the viewer long after the final frame.

The 4K UHD release also comes housed in a limited collector’s slipcase with artcards, a poster, and a booklet penned by Argento expert Alan Jones. Bonus materials include interviews with Argento, Michael Brandon, and Luigi Cozzi, plus a slew of trailers, TV spots, and promotional stills. New English subtitles and SDH support make this the definitive edition for English-speaking viewers.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet

While it has long been something of a curio in Argento’s canon, Four Flies on Grey Velvet now emerges with renewed urgency – a moody, violent psychological thriller that foreshadows the operatic terror of Suspiria and Inferno, but with a grimy realism all its own. It’s a film about being watched, haunted, and hunted—made by a man unafraid to stare directly into the abyss of his own mind.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet is available on 4K UHD and Blu-ray from Shameless Films from 28 April.
