Exclusive Interview: Corinne Ferguson

When you think of horror streaming platforms, the usual suspects come to mind: massive corporations curating predictable content. NYX TV, however, is anything but typical. Founded in 2022 and spearheaded by Corinne Ferguson, NYX Media Corporation has carved a unique niche in the entertainment landscape. First launched in the UK and later expanding to Canada, the platform offers expertly curated horror content that speaks to both die-hard fans and newcomers. But NYX isn’t just about programming—it’s a labour of love, passion, and inclusivity.

Corinne Ferguson NYX TV

Corinne, the only female CEO of a horror-focused channel, brings over 25 years of business expertise to the table. Her career spans everything from running marathons to producing indie horror films like Extremity. It was on that project that she met her co-founders, David Bond and Chris Wright, with whom she dreamed of creating a free, ad-supported streaming service for horror fans worldwide. Their goal? To deliver the best genre content while breaking barriers for diverse creators in a historically male-dominated industry.

Under Corinne’s leadership, NYX has become a beacon for horror enthusiasts, celebrating everything from Giallo classics to kid-friendly fare like Ruby Gloom. With a slate of programming that spans cult favourites, family-friendly daytime shows, and exclusive horror-hosted specials, NYX proves that the genre is far more than just blood and scares. We sat down with Corinne to discuss her journey, the challenges of launching NYX, and how she’s championing underrepresented voices in horror. From nostalgic “appointment-based viewing” to the upcoming “12 Slays of Christmas,” she shared why NYX is more than a channel—it’s a community for fans and creators alike.

Love Horror: For those unfamiliar, what is NYX, and what was the inspiration for it?

Corinne Ferguson: NYX TV is a passion project born from a deep love of horror and a desire to create a space where fans can feel at home. The name “Nyx” comes from Greek mythology—she’s the goddess of the night, a powerful and mysterious figure who embodies everything we want the channel to stand for. She was one of the few deities that even Zeus feared, which is such a striking symbol of strength and independence. To me, NYX represents not only the allure of darkness but also a protector of the night—a theme that resonates with our mission. We want to protect the genre and its fans, celebrating everything that makes horror unique.

Scream TV, our North American counterpart, is a more straightforward name, and it immediately connects with audiences who know and love the genre. While we’re Canadian, we actually launched NYX in the UK first, back in November 2022. That decision came down to timing and practicality—the platforms in the UK opened up faster, and acquiring content rights was more economical than we anticipated. We were also thrilled by how strong the horror community is in the UK, so it felt like the right place to start. Since then, we’ve expanded with the launch of SCREAM TV in October 2024, and it’s been an incredible experience to see both channels grow and evolve.

For me, NYX and SCREAM are deeply personal projects. As one of the three co-founders, I work alongside David Bond, an award-winning filmmaker with decades of experience in the horror genre, and Chris Wright, who has an extensive background in broadcasting and IT. Together, we’ve built something that isn’t just a business—it’s a community. We’re passionate about creating a platform that serves horror fans while respecting the rich history and culture of the genre.

What’s been the biggest challenge in building NYX, and what’s been the most rewarding moment so far?

One of the biggest challenges has been educating audiences about FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) channels. These channels are relatively new, especially in markets like the UK and Canada, where streaming habits have been dominated by subscription-based platforms. While people love the idea of free content, the concept of FAST still requires some explaining. It’s not just about offering a library of films—it’s about recreating the curated experience of traditional cable TV but with the accessibility of modern streaming. Getting people to understand how to access us and why we’re different has been a learning curve, but we’re making progress.

Another challenge has been balancing our aspirations with the financial realities of running a channel. We’re passionate about offering quality content, but as a smaller player in the industry, we have to be resourceful. That’s why much of our daytime programming leans into classic horror films and TV series. Not only are they budget-friendly, but they’re also an essential part of the genre’s history. Films like Nosferatu and The Fly laid the groundwork for modern horror and showcasing them aligns with our mission to educate and entertain. Still, the road hasn’t been easy, and we’re constantly looking for ways to expand our offerings while staying true to our vision.

The most rewarding moments come from our fans. At conventions like Sheffield Horror Con and For the Love of Horror, we’ve had the chance to connect with people who genuinely appreciate what we’re doing. Hearing someone say, “I’ve heard of you,” or seeing their excitement about a film we’ve aired—it’s incredibly fulfilling. One story that stands out is a fan who saw a movie on NYX that his father had worked on. He hadn’t seen it in years, and it was such an emotional moment for him. These interactions remind us why we’re so passionate about creating a platform for horror lovers.

How do you balance fan expectations with the business realities of running a streaming platform?

Balancing fan expectations with operational realities is an ongoing challenge, but it’s one we take seriously. Our fans are at the heart of everything we do, and we work hard to serve their interests while being transparent about our limitations. For example, our daytime programming often features classic horror films and TV series, partly because they’re more accessible from a licensing perspective but also because they’re integral to the genre’s history. We’re educating our audience about the origins of horror while creating a lineup that’s family-friendly enough for all-day viewing.

Our long-term goal is to reinvest in the channel as it grows. Right now, we’re gradually expanding our offerings with nostalgic series like the cartoons, Ruby Gloom and Tales from the Cryptkeeper. These shows appeal to younger viewers while also providing a sense of nostalgia for adults who grew up with them. As we generate more income, we plan to license bigger titles and expand both our daytime and nighttime programming. It’s a gradual process, but we’re committed to building something sustainable that fans will love.

At the same time, we’re not afraid to experiment. Our nighttime premieres feature a mix of cult classics like Demons and more contemporary horror films. We’re are trying to compete with billion-dollar platforms, but we are carving out a niche that prioritizes fan engagement and community. We listen to feedback, whether it’s positive or constructive, and use it to shape the direction of the channel. It’s a balancing act, but one that’s driven by our passion for the genre.

You’ve embraced “appointment-based viewing” as part of your programming strategy. What’s your vision for this approach in an on-demand world?

Corinne Ferguson NYX TVAppointment-based viewing taps into a sense of nostalgia that many people, including our core audience, still value. There’s something comforting about flipping on a channel and not having to make a decision—you’re guided through a curated experience that feels thoughtful and intentional. That’s what we’re trying to recreate with NYX. It’s not just about airing random content; it’s about crafting a journey through the horror genre, from classics to cult favorites to modern-day masterpieces.

That said, we know habits are changing, and we’re looking to blend the best of both worlds. One of our goals is to work with our platform partners to introduce features like rewinding or pausing live programming, which would add flexibility while maintaining the curated feel of a live channel. We’re also exploring options for offering select on-demand titles, so fans can access specific films while still enjoying the linear programming experience.

Ultimately, our aim is to make things easier for our viewers. With so much content available, decision fatigue is real. By offering a mix of curated programming and user-friendly features, we hope to create a space where fans can relax, discover new favourites, and enjoy the unique charm of appointment-based horror.

You’re a passionate advocate for underrepresented voices in horror. What initiatives are you working on to elevate those voices?

Supporting underrepresented voices in horror is one of our core values, and we’re always looking for ways to amplify those voices. One of our key initiatives is curating collections of short films from women and underrepresented groups. Shorts are often the first step for filmmakers, and showcasing their work is a way to celebrate their talent and introduce them to a wider audience. It’s also an opportunity to highlight the diversity within the genre, which is so important to us.

We’re also leaning heavily into events like Women In Horror Month, building entire programming blocks around films and shows created by or featuring strong female voices. Our goal isn’t just to air the content—it’s to promote it actively through social media, cross-promotion with filmmakers, and dedicated marketing campaigns. We want these creators to feel supported and celebrated, not just featured.

NYX TV pride

Another exciting development is our expansion into horror hosting. We’re bringing in diverse hosts to introduce films, share insights, and add commentary. It’s a way to make the viewing experience more interactive while spotlighting voices from various communities, including LGBTQ+ creators. Representation matters, and we’re committed to making NYX TV a platform that reflects the full spectrum of talent within the horror genre.

If you could choose one cult or classic horror film to add to NYX’s lineup, what would it be and why?

That’s such a tough question because there are so many great films I’d love to feature! If I had to pick one, it would probably be the timeless classic – An American Werewolf in London. It would be fantastic to see such an iconic 80s horror screening for our audiences on NYX TV.

I would also love to bring in something like Candyman. Tony Todd’s performance is legendary, and the film’s themes of fear, trauma, and social commentary make it a standout in the genre. It’s the kind of film that aligns perfectly with our mission to showcase not just entertaining horror but meaningful stories that resonate with audiences.

Candyman

Of course, licensing films like these is a challenge, especially as a smaller platform. But we’re not afraid to knock on doors and advocate for our fans. Whether it’s a childhood classic or a modern masterpiece, our goal is to build a library that celebrates the full spectrum of horror, one title at a time.

Finally, tell us about the upcoming “12 Slays of Christmas” event.

“The 12 Slays of Christmas” is one of the things I’m most excited about this holiday season. It’s a festive programming block running across both NYX in the UK and SCREAM TV in North America. The lineup features everything from cheesy holiday slashers to eerie Christmas-themed hauntings. It’s perfect for anyone who loves horror but doesn’t necessarily connect with traditional holiday cheer.

We’re airing it as a marathon on Christmas Day as well, so if you want to escape the usual holiday fare, we’ve got you covered. It’s part of our effort to embrace the fun, quirky side of horror while still delivering quality content. We’ll be promoting it heavily on social media, so fans can look forward to sneak peeks and updates leading up to the event.

NYX TV 12 Slays

For us, this is about more than just programming—it’s about creating a sense of community. Whether you’re watching with friends or enjoying a quiet night in, “12 Slays of Christmas” is our way of celebrating the holidays with our fans. We hope they love it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!

Thank you, Corinne. We can’t wait to tune in!
