Horror Favourites – Caye Casas

Caye CasasMake room for The Coffee Table (aka La Mesita del Comedor), a wickedly original horror from Spain, helmed by Caye Casas (Killing God), who co-wrote with Cristina Borobia (RIP), which made waves (and stomachs churn) on the festival circuit and is now set for its UK debut thanks to Second Sight Films.

We grabbed a cappuccino with the amazing director to talk about his favorite scary movies.

The film has been described as ‘An unsettling descent into absolute madness and misery’ and ‘A genre-leaping marvel… a farce… a melodrama, now a tragedy… uproariously funny until it is not at all’ and can now be experienced by British audiences as its set for a digital release on 20 May 2024.

David Pareja (Amigo) and Estefanía de los Santos (Jaulas) give gobsmackingly brilliant performances as Jesus and María, a couple going through a tough time in their relationship following the recent arrival of their newborn son. The fiery pair are struggling with the pressures that a new baby brings and their bickering only amplifies on a shopping trip to buy furniture that’s about to change their lives forever.

What begins as a simple disagreement over which coffee table to buy quickly descends into a shocking and tragic event that will rip their lives apart. The film, co-starring Josep Maria Riera, Claudia Riera and Eduardo Antuña promises an excruciatingly uncomfortable and harrowing experience, with a darker-than-dark sense of humour.

Sit down with The Coffee Table for a fantastically horrifying feature that you’ll never forget.

Below Caye Casas talks about 2 horrors he loves the most:

“What I look for in a horror film is that it makes me feel strong emotions, that it disturbs me, that it terrifies me, that it surprises me, that it makes me feel bad, I think that is, or should be, the purpose of genre cinema. Lately it’s been hard for me to feel those emotions, there is a lot of repetition and copying, movies with big budgets that are more of the same and are easily forgettable.

But there are also other different films that I love, that take risks and make you live a horrifying experience. So I’ll say two…

My friend Demian Rugna’s recent hit When Evil Lurks is a cruel, brutal film, with wonderful performances and some of the most unforgettable scenes of this year in horror cinema. One of those movies that has the peculiarity that you can enjoy it, while having a terrible time. I love how it is shot and I love everything that comes out of my dear Demian’s alopecic head.

Another one that I will highlight, because it perfectly fulfils everything I mentioned before, is Eden Lake. Uffffff, how bad it is to watch this fucking story? That’s what I’m looking for in horror movies, that they make me suffer, that it’s a horrible experience, that I regret having seen the movie!!! Eden Lake is a marvel of tension, cruelty… human violence in its purest form, without artifice, it is unbearably wonderful, a masterpiece of horror cinema, for me. I love it, although I’ve only seen it twice, you end up destroyed.”
