Tricky Questions for the cast and crew of The Complex featuring Director Paul Raschid

The Complex is a unique Sc-Horror out now across the globe on PC, PS4, Xbox One & Nintendo Switch and we were lucky enough to lock down some of the cast and crew to take part in our exclusive interview.

Following Black Mirror’s ‘Bandersnatch’ and BAFTA-winning game Late Shift – THE COMPLEX is written by Lynn Renee Maxcy, part of the Emmy award-winning writing team from The Handmaid’s Tale and is the very first live interactive Science Fiction film and one of only a small number of interactive films in existence.

THE COMPLEX is directed by visionary new talent Paul Raschid (White Chamber) and stars Michelle Mylett (Letterkenny, Bad Blood), Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones, The Witch), Al Weaver (Grantchester) and Twitch streamer and former Xbox UK presenter, Leah Viathan. The film’s award-winning team includes Oscar-nominated Production Designer Guy Thompson (Black Sheep) and internationally acclaimed DOP Matthias Pilz (Top Boy).

The interactive film is highly unique in that it offers multi-optional storytelling with 8 different outcomes; a real-time Relationship Status Tracking that influences the story as you play and a real-time Personality Trait Tracking that evolves based on your choices.

We set the director of The Complex Paul Raschid some Tricky Questions to celebrate the realise of his amazing movie.

1. How did you get into movie making?
I’m very fortunate to have been born into the film industry. My father was a cinema operator when I was a child and then he became an independent film producer, so I spent my formative years on his film sets and shadowing him. That’s where I learnt I wanted to get into the industry, so when I finished university I joined the family business and began writing scripts for him to produce. The natural progression from there was to direct. As I said, I know it’s a very unique and privileged path that I’ve taken and one I would never take for granted!

2. What was the best bit of filming The Complex?
Probably the camaraderie amongst the team behind it. It was a very insular production in the sense that we spent 90% of the time shooting in our main location down in Kent, so the cast & crew were all working and living in the same place. This obviously could have been a nightmare but it actually fostered a really tight-nit, family feel because everyone was just so cool! That kind of energy is priceless for an independent film production and made a logistically challenging shoot (bloody interactive!) quite a joy to navigate!

3. What was the last great game you played?
We’re currently in a nationwide lockdown because of the Coronavirus outbreak, so I’ve been playing a lot of Call Of Duty with my friends, but, I’m also a big RPG fan. I recently completed Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It’s the latest instalment of a fantasy game franchise I’ve been a fan of since I was a child and I love the strategy-based battle mechanics. The storyline was epic as well! It took me about 80 hours to complete it I think?!

4. If you were locked down in a laboratory like the characters in The Complex who would you want to be trapped with?
If it was a character from the project itself, it would have to be our protagonist Dr. Amy Tennant. She has the knowledge and skillset to give us a good chance of survival, plus an infectious determination and dry sense of humour to ensure the lab would be full of laughs and good vibes. Outside of the project… probably Al Weaver who plays the role of Rees! What Al would lack in epidemiological and technological nouse, he makes up for in spades with hilarity and football chat.

5. Whats your favourite Horror film and why?
Such a tough question. In recent times, ‘Get Out’ made a really big impression on me for many reasons. However, a seminal Horror film for me is ‘The Changelling’ from 1980. It was one of the first films that truly terrified me when I was younger and inspired my love of the genre. The use of shadow and sound to illicit terror left a really lasting impression on me. The seance scene still gives me chills thinking about it!

6. Whats next for you?
I really, really believe in the interactive format. Immersing myself in it has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling challenges of my career so far – a massive thank you to my brilliant producers John Giwa-Amu and Jade Alexander for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to do so! I’ve been working on a few interactive scripts (some Horror!) that I would love to get made once the world has conquered this horrible outbreak we are currently fighting.

THE COMPLEX is a completely live action, interactive sci-fi thriller filmed in the UK. Available Worldwide on PC, PS4, Xbox One & Nintendo Switch NOW.
