‘Sugar’ Season Two Sends Colin Farrell Into a New Los Angeles Mystery
Two years after Sugar delivered one of television’s most talked-about twists, Colin Farrell is preparing to step back into the rain-soaked streets of Los Angeles as private investigator John Sugar. Apple TV+ has confirmed that the second season of the acclaimed neo-noir mystery series will debut globally on 19 June, bringing Farrell’s troubled detective into a new missing persons case that soon expands into something far larger and far more dangerous.

The eight-episode season will launch with a single episode before continuing with weekly instalments through to 7 August. Farrell once again leads the cast while also serving as an executive producer on the series.
Created by Mark Protosevich, Sugar first arrived on Apple TV+ in April 2024 and quickly distinguished itself from more conventional detective dramas. Combining classic private investigator influences with contemporary storytelling, the series earned praise from critics and viewers, while also receiving a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series.
Season two picks up after the dramatic events of the first outing, with John Sugar choosing to remain on Earth in the hope of locating his missing sister. His latest assignment begins with the search for the older brother of a rising local boxer. However, what initially appears to be a straightforward missing persons investigation gradually uncovers a wider conspiracy stretching across Los Angeles.

According to Apple TV+, the new season will force Sugar to confront difficult questions about his own moral boundaries as he becomes increasingly entangled in the case.
Alongside Farrell, the new season introduces several additions to the cast. Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly and Sasha Calle join the series, while Shea Whigham appears as a special guest star.
Behind the scenes, Sugar enters a new chapter under showrunner Sam Catlin, whose previous credits include Breaking Bad and Preacher. Catlin executive produces alongside Audrey Chon, Simon Kinberg, Farrell, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich.

The series has steadily built a reputation since its debut, earning positive reviews for its visual style and Farrell’s central performance. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes currently records an approval rating of 82 percent for the first season, while critics frequently highlighted the programme’s distinctive approach to detective fiction.
Production on the second season began in April 2025 and wrapped later that summer, following Apple TV+’s decision to renew the series in October 2024. The renewal came shortly after the first season generated significant discussion online, particularly following its late-season revelations.
Catch Sugar on Apple TV+ from 19 June.
