‘Cape Fear’ Heads to Apple TV with Bardem and Adams at the Centre

Apple TV has confirmed a June 5 global debut for Cape Fear, a new psychological thriller series that revisits one of American cinema’s most enduring stories of vengeance and moral reckoning. The 10-part limited series will premiere with its first two episodes, followed by weekly instalments through to the end of July, marking one of the streamer’s most prominent drama launches of the year.

The project brings together an unusually heavyweight creative line-up. Javier Bardem and Amy Adams headline the series and also serve as executive producers, alongside creator and showrunner Nick Antosca. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are also on board as executive producers, returning to material they previously helped shape for the screen with the 1991 feature film adaptation.

Inspired by both the 1962 film Cape Fear and Scorsese’s later remake, the new series reframes the story for a longform television format. Adams stars as Anna Bowden, a successful attorney whose settled family life is thrown into turmoil when Max Cady, played by Bardem, is released from prison. Cady is a violent offender whose conviction was secured by Anna and her husband Tom, portrayed here by Patrick Wilson. With his freedom restored, Cady sets out to exact a carefully calculated revenge, placing the Bowden family under escalating pressure.

Antosca, whose previous television work has leaned into psychologically intense genre storytelling, oversees the series under his overall deal with UCP. The pilot episode is directed by Morten Tyldum, adding further prestige to a production that also features CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector, Anna Baryshnikov, Lily Collias, Joe Anders and Malia Pyles in supporting roles.

The series is produced by UCP in partnership with Amblin Television, with Spielberg’s company continuing its long association with the property. While the original films were shaped by their specific eras, the Apple TV version expands the material across multiple episodes, allowing for deeper focus on character, consequence and the corrosive effects of fear on family life.

Cape Fear arrives as Apple TV continues to strengthen its slate of adult dramas, following a run of awards recognition that has helped position the platform as a serious competitor in the prestige television space.

We’ll share more news and – of course – the trailer, when it arrives.
