‘Woken’ Drops UK Release Date for Dystopian Sci Fi Thriller

A remote island, a fractured memory and a world on the brink form the basis of Woken, a dystopian sci-fi thriller set for UK digital release on 25 May through 101 Films.

Woken

Directed by Alan Friel in his feature debut, the film centres on Anna, played by Erin Kellyman, who wakes following an accident with no recollection of her past. Isolated and heavily pregnant, she is surrounded by unfamiliar figures claiming to be her husband and neighbours, portrayed by Ivanno Jeremiah, Maxine Peake and Corrado Invernizzi. As details of her life are relayed back to her, Anna begins to question their version of events and starts searching for answers herself.

The official synopsis confirms that Anna’s investigation leads to the discovery of a pandemic that has pushed humanity to near extinction. As her suspicions deepen, the film follows her attempts to piece together her identity while confronting the possibility that those closest to her may not be what they seem.

Kellyman takes the lead following a run of high-profile projects across film and television, including Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Green Knight and the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. She is also set to appear in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Opposite her, Maxine Peake brings further genre experience following roles in Black Mirror and Peterloo, while Jeremiah is known for appearances in Humans and Lockwood & Co.

Production on Woken took place in Ireland in 2022, with filming locations including Fanore Beach in County Clare and the University of Limerick. The project received backing from Screen Ireland, with additional support from the Italian Ministry of Culture. The film is produced by Fantastic Films and Propaganda Italia, with Bankside Films handling international sales.

Prior to its UK release, Woken screened at the Dublin International Film Festival in March 2024 and later opened in Italy the same year. Its arrival on digital platforms marks its latest rollout, making it accessible to UK and Ireland audiences.
