The 666 Film Challenge Returns With 66 Hours of Horror
Independent filmmakers with a passion for horror will soon be racing against the clock once again as the Independent Horror Society prepares to launch the fourth edition of its fast-paced filmmaking competition, the 666 Film Challenge.

The event invites participants to write, shoot and edit a complete horror short in just 66 hours and 6 minutes. This year’s challenge begins on Friday 22 May 2026 at 9pm UK time, when registered teams will receive the official creative brief outlining the requirements for their film.
From that moment the countdown begins.
Participants must create a finished horror short running between one and six minutes, delivering their completed film by 3:06pm on Monday 25 May. Once the deadline passes, the submission portal closes and judging begins.
The competition encourages experimentation and welcomes a wide range of filmmaking styles. Entries can be produced using traditional live-action filmmaking as well as animation, claymation, stop-motion or other visual formats. The aim is to reward creativity and resourcefulness under intense time pressure.
Although creative work cannot begin until the official brief arrives, teams are free to prepare logistics ahead of the start time. Filmmakers can assemble crews, secure locations and organise equipment before the challenge begins to maximise the short production window once the clock starts.
Alongside the time limit, entrants must incorporate elements included in the brief. These may include a required prop, a line of dialogue or a specific sound cue that must appear within the final film.

The competition remains open to creators of all experience levels, from first-time filmmakers experimenting with horror to established independent directors looking to test their skills under tight deadlines. Entry costs £6.66 per team, with registration available through Eventbrite until the challenge begins.
Completed films will be reviewed by a judging panel before the winners are revealed at a gala screening event showcasing the best entries.
Several awards will be presented as part of the challenge. The Best Overall Film prize recognises the entry that stands out across all aspects of production and carries a £150 bonus prize. A separate Neo-Fright Award highlights first-time filmmakers and includes a £100 prize.
Other categories include Best Script, Best Camera Work, Best Protagonist, Best Antagonist and Best Death. Winners will receive a 666 Film Challenge trophy alongside additional prizes that vary depending on the category.
With the next edition of the 666 Film Challenge fast approaching, horror creators across the UK and beyond now have just a few weeks to prepare before the countdown begins. For more information, and to register, visit: independenthorrorsociety.com/the-666-film-challenge-2026-edition/
