‘The Kinderhook Creature’ Reopens New York’s Bigfoot Case
Nearly five decades after a series of baffling encounters unsettled a quiet New York community, filmmaker Seth Breedlove returns to familiar territory with The Kinderhook Creature: In the Shadow of Sasquatch, a new documentary set to debut across digital platforms on 24 March.

Produced by Small Town Monsters, the Ohio-based banner known for chronicling America’s most enduring cryptid lore, the film explores reports of a towering, upright figure said to have stalked the woods and back roads of Kinderhook, a rural enclave in Columbia County. While the town is defined by its postcard streams and generational homes, it has also been shaped by whispers of something far stranger.
At the centre of the mystery is author and radio broadcaster Bruce Hallenbeck, whose experiences in the 1980s propelled Kinderhook into international headlines. Hallenbeck and his family described repeated encounters with an unknown creature, sparking speculation that the region might harbour its own version of Sasquatch. Those claims, though often dismissed, have lingered in local folklore ever since.

Breedlove’s film functions both as an adaptation and a companion piece to Hallenbeck’s book The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond A Personal Reminiscence. Beyond cataloguing sightings, the documentary examines the personal toll of living under the weight of unexplained phenomena. Hallenbeck’s life story unfolds alongside eyewitness testimony and archival material, situating the alleged encounters within a broader tapestry of reported paranormal activity.
Breedlove, founder of Small Town Monsters, has built a catalogue that includes The Mothman of Point Pleasant, On the Trail of Bigfoot and American Werewolves. With more than two dozen features to his name, his approach blends investigative journalism with a reverence for local storytelling. Rather than positioning himself as a debunker or believer, Breedlove often allows witnesses to speak at length, inviting audiences to weigh credibility for themselves.

The production was funded through Small Town Monsters’ 2025 Kickstarter campaign, underscoring the dedicated following that continues to support long-form explorations of cryptid culture. Streaming availability will include Apple TV, Prime Video and Google Play, broadening access to viewers outside the niche documentary circuit.
In revisiting Kinderhook’s shadowed woods, the film raises familiar questions about memory, myth and the endurance of unsolved mysteries. Whether the creature remains a case of misidentification, mass hysteria or something less easily categorised, the legend has proven remarkably resilient.
