Clive Barker’s cult fantasy horror Nightbreed is set to receive its most expansive home release to date when Arrow Video launches a two-disc Limited Edition 4K UHD set on 25 May 2026.

Emerging from Barker’s singular imagination, the 1990 feature has long occupied a unique place within genre cinema. Adapted from Barker’s novella Cabal, the film follows troubled young man Aaron Boone, played by Craig Sheffer, who is drawn to the mythic underground refuge of Midian, a sanctuary populated by monsters who have retreated from human persecution. As Boone seeks belonging, he finds himself framed for a string of murders by his manipulative psychiatrist Dr Decker, portrayed by David Cronenberg.

Initially hampered by studio interference and marketing that misrepresented its tone, Nightbreed struggled at the box office upon release. Over time, however, it has undergone critical reassessment, with many embracing its outsider mythology and emotional core. Arrow’s new edition reflects that enduring appeal, presenting both the original theatrical cut and the restored director’s cut in 4K with Dolby Vision.

The Limited Edition package includes newly commissioned artwork by Gilles Vranckx, a collectors’ booklet featuring writing by Mark Salisbury and Barker archivists Phil and Sarah Stokes, plus a double-sided fold-out poster. Both cuts feature restored audio options and optional subtitles.

Disc one houses the theatrical cut alongside a wealth of archival and newly produced material, including a feature-length documentary, Monsters, Maniacs and Midian, built from never-before-seen interviews and behind-the-scenes footage shot at Pinewood Studios. Additional extras range from deleted scenes and an extended torture sequence to image galleries and the original screenplay.

The second disc focuses on the director’s cut, with multiple new audio commentaries and an extensive documentary, Tribes of the Moon, charting the film’s turbulent journey from production to restoration. Featurettes explore the creature designs, prosthetic work by Bob Keen, conceptual art from Ralph McQuarrie and the film’s abandoned stop motion experiments. The release also includes makeup tests, rehearsal footage and the “Johnny Get Angry” music video.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Arrow’s restoration of Nightbreed is a richly imagined dark fantasy that dared to sympathise with its monsters. More than three decades on, Midian opens its gates once again – it would be rude not to enter!

The 4K Limited Edition of Nightbreed is released on 25 May 2026.
