‘Down River’ Trailer Teases Haunting West Virginia Mystery

Quiver Distribution has released the first trailer for Down River, a moody, rural thriller set in the coal-mining mountains of West Virginia, promising a brooding take on small-town secrets, buried guilt and the kind of creeping dread that festers in forgotten corners of America. The film arrives on digital platforms and On Demand on 9 December.

Directed by Brian Barnard and Tommy Walton, the film is positioned as a modern Southern Gothic work, drawing tonal comparisons to Winter’s Bone and Shotgun Stories. Rather than leaning on spectacle, Down River appears focused on atmosphere, character tension and the psychological rot that spreads when truth and loyalty collide.

The story follows a local sheriff and his deputy who are called to an abandoned farmhouse deep in the Appalachian woods. What begins as a routine investigation slowly unravels into something far murkier, with fractured clues and long-buried histories threatening to destabilise not only the community but the sheriff’s own grip on reality. Much of the film’s weight is carried by Jody Thompson and Randy McDowell, who also wrote the script alongside Jody Thompson, embedding themselves in roles shaped around their understanding of the region and its folklore-tinged anxieties.

The supporting cast includes Ashley Sutton, Bethany Anne Lind, Lori Beth Sikes and Mark Ashworth, several of whom bring indie and genre credentials. Lind in particular has carved out a strong presence in independent thrillers and grounded dramas, and her involvement hints at the film’s tone: intimate, tense and rooted in emotional stakes rather than broad theatrics.

Barnard, whose past work spans from visual effects on The Case for Christ to the psychological thriller Through the Glass Darkly, reunited with Walton following years of collaborations in cinematography and production. They’ve steered the project towards what appears to be a stripped-back, character-driven mystery, tapping into the Appalachian landscape as both setting and psychological force.

The film’s production credits stretch across several companies, including Fuel Films Company, 77 Entertainment, Oak Fish and Stroop Fik Entertainment. Producer Stelio Savante brokered the deal with Quiver Distribution, with Larry Greenberg representing the distributor.

Randy McDowell’s background also adds an intriguing footnote to the project. Beyond his screen roles in Elvis, I Can Only Imagine and Dance of the Dead, he has spent years shaping festival spaces for independent filmmakers. That experience shows here: Down River carries the hallmarks of grassroots filmmaking built on collaboration, regional specificity and slow-burn tension.

While the trailer keeps its cards close, it positions the film as a psychological descent rather than a straightforward crime mystery. With its December release now confirmed, Down River looks set to close the year with a sombre, atmospheric thriller aimed squarely at audiences who appreciate tightly wound storytelling.
