Zombie Fever Meets Family Chaos in ‘My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving’

A quirky blend of camp, compassion and chaos, My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving has shuffled its way onto Tubi just in time for the holiday season. The offbeat indie, which has already earned a reputation as a cult curio, is now available to stream for free on the platform through Freestyle Digital Media.

My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving

Directed by Charles B. Unger and written by Richard Soriano, My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving follows a zombie-obsessed special needs adult on a heartfelt and unpredictable journey through South Los Angeles. As he searches for his estranged mother, a local Korean family and a street gang vie to take him in as their own, with his love of a zombie TV show becoming an unlikely tool for forgiveness and connection. The result is a heartfelt, darkly humorous tale that balances absurdity with sincerity, anchored by a commitment to representation rarely seen in genre film.

The film stars Joshua Warren Bush as Marcus, alongside Ray Chang, Chris Wu, Grace Shen, Walker Haynes, Ciera Foster, Byron Vazquez Jr., Paul Tully, Callie Gilbert and Lisa K. Crosato. It was produced by Holly Soriano, Richard Soriano and Unger, who brings decades of filmmaking experience to the project.

Unger’s career began in animation and editing before moving into independent cinema, with earlier features Mr. Lucke and Come Together gaining festival recognition and international distribution. His varied background informs My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving, which marries an affection for cult genre tropes with a sincere exploration of community and identity.

Writer and producer Richard Soriano describes the film as a personal project inspired by the friendships he formed with special needs adults while volunteering. His creative partnership with Holly Soriano has resulted in a film that mixes the irreverent spirit of Shaun of the Dead with a tender look at people on society’s margins. Holly Soriano, who is now developing two new features to shoot in Montana, has said that the project’s aim was to spotlight an often-overlooked community through a story that celebrates humour, empathy and inclusion.

The release also highlights Tubi’s growing influence as a streaming platform for independent and cult cinema. With more than 100 million monthly active users reported earlier this year, the service continues to expand its eclectic library, providing a new home for offbeat gems like My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving.

Combining quirky comedy with a dose of zombie-inspired catharsis, My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving brings a new twist to holiday viewing. It’s an unlikely family story told with sincerity, strangeness, and just the right amount of undead flair.

My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving is now streaming on Tubi via Freestyle Digital Media.
