Mia Goth’s Horror Icons Collide as ‘Pearl’ and ‘MaXXXine’ Hit 4K

Second Sight Films has announced lavish new 4K UHD Limited Edition releases for Pearl and MaXXXine, the second and third instalments in Ti West’s acclaimed X trilogy. Both films arrive on 17 November, featuring extensive bonus content, collector’s packaging and newly commissioned artwork that celebrates the world West and his muse Mia Goth built across three genre-defining stories.

Pearl serves as the vivid, unsettling prequel to X, exploring the early life of the titular character long before the events that unfolded on that ill-fated Texas farm. Set in 1918, the film follows a young woman suffocating under the weight of her domestic life, isolated on a rural homestead while dreaming of fame and adoration. Her ambitions, however, twist into obsession and violence, setting the stage for the creation of one of modern horror’s most fascinating figures.

The film’s painterly visuals and psychological intensity showcase West’s growing ambition as a director. Known for his methodical pacing and meticulous framing, West first made his name with indie horror hits such as The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, establishing a signature style steeped in atmosphere, slow-burn tension and period detail. With Pearl, he turned that eye toward something altogether more tragic and human, using horror as a lens for yearning and repression.

At the heart of it all is Mia Goth, whose portrayal of Pearl drew universal admiration for its volatility and magnetism. Already celebrated for her fearless turns in Suspiria and Infinity Pool, Goth continues to carve out a place as one of the most distinctive performers in genre cinema today. The Pearl Limited Edition 4K release comes housed in a rigid slipcase with newly commissioned artwork, a 120-page book of essays, and new interviews with the director, cinematographer Eliot Rockett and production designer Tom Hammock.

Rounding out the trilogy, MaXXXine propels the story into the neon haze of 1980s Hollywood, where Maxine Minx – Goth’s other unforgettable alter ego – tries to transform herself from adult film star to legitimate actress. The journey, however, leads her into a dangerous world of predators, cults and killers, as she fights to claim the fame she believes she deserves.

The film’s retro aesthetic, pulsing soundtrack and ensemble of high-profile co-stars, including Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito and Michelle Monaghan, mark MaXXXine as West’s most ambitious project to date. Continuing his partnership with A24, West blends the sleaze and glamour of exploitation cinema with a satirical edge that examines fame, morality and survival.

Both Pearl and MaXXXine exemplify the creative partnership between West and Goth, a collaboration that has revitalised the slasher genre for a new generation. With these new Second Sight restorations, their meticulously crafted worlds have never looked, or sounded better.
