‘Black Phone 2’ Trailer Rings Out With Deadly Calls From Beyond

The Grabber is back, and this time he isn’t bound by life or death. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have unleashed the trailer for Black Phone 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 horror hit that became a worldwide box office success. The film is set to arrive in cinemas on 17 October.

Four years after Finn (Mason Thames) escaped his abductor, the teenager is still coping with the shadow of his ordeal. His younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), now 15, begins to experience terrifying visions in her dreams. Through the black phone, she receives calls forewarning her of boys being hunted at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Her visions suggest that The Grabber, played once again by Ethan Hawke, is seeking revenge from beyond the grave.

As the siblings investigate, Gwen persuades Finn to accompany her to the camp during a snowstorm. What follows is the discovery of a connection between their family and The Grabber that forces them to confront horrors far more personal than they imagined.

Director Scott Derrickson returns alongside longtime collaborator C. Robert Cargill, with whom he co-wrote both films. The sequel is based on characters created by Joe Hill, whose short story inspired the original. Producers Jason Blum, Derrickson and Cargill again lead the project, with Hill, Adam Hendricks and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers.

The cast expands to include Demián Bichir as the camp supervisor, Arianna Rivas as his niece, and Miguel Mora, reprising his role in a new guise connected to one of the Grabber’s earlier victims. Jeremy Davies returns as Finn and Gwen’s father, Terrence, while Maev Beaty and Graham Abbey also join the line-up.

Released in 2022, The Black Phone grossed more than $160 million worldwide on a modest budget and earned strong reviews for its performances and unsettling atmosphere. That success paved the way for Derrickson to revisit the material. He has said that Joe Hill himself pitched the idea that unlocked the sequel, which was shot in Toronto under the working title Mysterium from late 2024 into early 2025.

While Cillian Murphy will only make a brief appearance here, reprising his role as Jim from 28 Days Later in a cameo designed to set up future films, Derrickson has hinted that Ethan Hawke’s presence will loom larger than ever, with The Grabber gaining new powers in death.

Black Phone 2 will premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month before rolling out worldwide. Its release continues Blumhouse’s strategy of cultivating original franchises alongside established properties, with Joe Hill’s creation now firmly positioned as a modern horror series.
