Rocky Horror Documentary ‘Sane Inside Insanity’ Premieres at FrightFest
FrightFest London will host the English premiere of Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror on Sunday 24 August, bringing a fresh chronicle of Richard O’Brien’s creation to the big screen in the year of its half-century anniversary. Directed by Andreas Zerr, the feature-length documentary spans more than a decade of interviews, extensive archive research and global filming to tell the full story of how a quirky stage play transformed into one of the most enduring cult sensations in cinema history.

The documentary opens with Rocky Horror’s unlikely beginnings: a two-page script written in crayon that evolved into an Off West End hit in the early 1970s before becoming Jim Sharman’s 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Though the film initially flopped, it quickly gained traction as a midnight movie, ultimately grossing more than $500 million worldwide and reshaping ideas of performance, identity and community.
Featuring new interviews with Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell and Barry Bostwick, alongside contributions from Jim Sharman, Richard Hartley and costume designer Sue Blane, the film assembles key voices from Rocky Horror’s past to provide insider perspectives rarely heard before. Their testimonies sit alongside the words of fans, historians and cultural commentators who position Rocky Horror as more than a musical. Zerr’s film explores its role as a touchstone for punk and glam aesthetics, its influence on later artists from David Bowie to the Sex Pistols, and its significance as a site of self-discovery for generations of LGBTQIA+ audiences.

The film also pays tribute to figures behind the fandom, including Sal Piro, who spearheaded audience participation in the late 1970s and became emblematic of Rocky Horror’s growing subculture. Drawing on fan footage, anniversary performances and rare backstage material, the documentary sets out to capture not only the show’s history but its living, evolving community.
Zerr’s project began in 2014 as a short feature but expanded after the first interviews revealed just how untold much of Rocky Horror’s history remained. Shot in the UK, US, Australia, Germany and Italy, with a final leg in New York City, the film reflects Rocky Horror’s international footprint. The English premiere at FrightFest follows screenings in Krakow, Ottawa and Durham, with a wider release set for 26 September to coincide with the official 50th anniversary.

By placing Rocky Horror in its cultural context while celebrating its exuberant oddities, Sane Inside Insanity positions itself as the definitive account of how a low-budget experiment in musical theatre became a global ritual.
