‘Blockhead’ Brings Psychotic Home Makeover Horror to FrightFest
Blue Finch Films has unveiled a first look at Blockhead, the surreal psychological thriller from Matt Harlock, which will have its world premiere at FrightFest on 23 August. The feature marks Harlock’s debut as a fiction filmmaker following his acclaimed documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story.

Blockhead stars Danny Horn as a creatively paralysed novelist whose life begins to unravel after he hires a volatile decorator, played by Joe Sims, in a last-ditch bid to kickstart his writing. What begins as an eccentric house call rapidly evolves into a violent, increasingly surreal descent into madness, as the boundaries between author and creation begin to dissolve. Michele Moran, recently seen in The Witcher, co-stars.
Described by its makers as a heady collision of dark comedy and psychological horror, the film explores the fragility of the creative process and the dangerous spaces artists can inhabit when fiction takes on a life of its own. Drawing comparisons to the anxiety-driven surrealism of Barton Fink and the claustrophobic mania of Black Swan, Blockhead builds toward a brutal crescendo that threatens to consume its protagonist completely.

Harlock developed the project through his Halflife Films banner, producing alongside Oliver Kendall, with support from Mint Cake and xFilm. Speaking to Variety, Harlock described the shoot as a high-intensity production that mirrored the film’s escalating paranoia. The result is a feverish plunge into artistic desperation, anchored by committed performances from Horn and Sims.
Blue Finch Films boarded Blockhead ahead of FrightFest, acquiring international sales rights in tandem with Eric Owen’s In a Cold Vein. Both titles are part of the distributor’s expanding genre slate, which has recently included Redux Redux, Hellcat and Hold The Fort.

For Harlock, best known for chronicling countercultural icons, the transition to scripted cinema has been long anticipated. With Blockhead, he delivers a debut feature that is both confrontational and stylised, placing the audience inside the mind of a writer spiralling beyond the point of return.
Blockhead will premiere at FrightFest on 23 August. For more information on this year’s fantastic FrightFest, and for tickets, visit frightfest.co.uk.
