Alaskan Nightmare Awaits in ‘No Tears in Hell’ Digital Debut
Scatena & Rosner Films will release the unnerving serial killer thriller No Tears in Hell on digital and VOD platforms from 12 August. The film delves into the macabre real-life crimes of Russian murderer Alexander Spesivtsev, known as the Siberian Ripper, with Shadowhunters actor Luke Baines embodying the sadistic killer. Set against the bleak backdrop of an Alaskan winter, the story follows a mother-and-son pair who turn their remote home into a lair of abduction, abuse and cannibalism.

Director and co-writer Michael Caissie adapts a story by Alexander Nistratov into a claustrophobic portrait of depravity. The late Gwen Van Dam plays Spesivtsev’s domineering mother, whose complicity in her son’s atrocities adds a chilling familial dimension. Supporting performances come from Tatjana Marjanovic, Audrey Neal, Gabriella Westwood and Erik Fellows, each portraying victims ensnared in the killers’ frozen trap.

The screenplay captures the stark isolation of the Alaskan wilderness and the twisted bond between mother and son. Production designer work and icy cinematography amplify the sense of entrapment, while the sound design punctuates moments of dread with unnerving silence. Baines transforms physically for the role, adopting Spesivtsev’s gaunt frame and unsettling stare to convey a predator who views his victims as objects.
No Tears in Hell refrains from sensationalising historic crime, instead examining the psychology of its protagonists. Caissie’s direction balances brutal realism with controlled pacing, allowing tension to build as the duo’s twisted hospitality unravels. The filmmakers have assembled a production team led by producers Bernard Salzmann and Michael Caissie and executive producers Michael Tadross Jr and Alexander Nistratov, aiming to deliver a true-crime horror experience that refuses to look away.

The film’s August release follows its premiere screenings for press and festival programmers. As digital platforms prepare to host No Tears in Hell, genre fans can expect an unrelenting portrayal of one of history’s most notorious killers, reframed through a North American lens and set amid the merciless cold of Alaska.
