Matthew Lillard Returns as Stu in ‘Scream 7’- But How?!

After nearly three decades, Scream 7 is set to deliver one of the biggest twists in the franchise’s history — Matthew Lillard is returning as Stu Macher. The announcement, revealed by Deadline, has sparked speculation and excitement among horror fans, as the character was believed to have been definitively killed off in the 1996 original.

Lillard’s return marks a full-circle moment for the actor, whose role as the horror-obsessed, unhinged high schooler in Wes Craven’s Scream launched his career. While his character’s demise—via a television dropped on his head—seemed final, the Scream series has never shied away from bending its own rules. Whether through flashbacks, retcons, or unexpected narrative twists, the franchise has found ways to bring back past characters in surprising ways. The question remains: How is Stu still alive? Fans have speculated for years that he could have survived, perhaps resurfacing as a mastermind behind Ghostface killings all along.

Matthew Lillard joins franchise veterans Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, as well as Scream VI stars Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. The film will also introduce a host of new cast members, including Isabel May (1883), Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Asa Germann (Gen V), and horror regulars like Mckenna Grace (The Bad Seed, Annabelle Comes Home), Anna Camp (True Blood), and Devon Sawa (Final Destination).

Behind the scenes, Scream 7 sees franchise creator Kevin Williamson stepping into the director’s chair for the first time, with Scream and Scream VI co-writer Guy Busick handling the script. James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein, the team behind the series’ recent revival, are once again producing.

With the film set to hit cinemas on February 27, 2026, Paramount and Spyglass are betting on the franchise’s enduring appeal. The last installment, Scream VI, broke franchise records with a domestic box office gross of over $108 million and a worldwide total of $169 million. With Scream movies consistently proving to be lucrative horror hits, Scream 7 is poised to keep the momentum going.

Matthew Lillard’s Horror Renaissance

Lillard’s return to Scream comes at a time when he’s experiencing a resurgence in the horror genre. In 2023, he starred as William Afton in Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, a role that solidified his place as a modern “scream king.” The film was a massive success, earning over $297 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time.

Beyond his horror credentials, Lillard’s career has been remarkably diverse. He gained cult status with his performances in SLC Punk! and Thirteen Ghosts, and later won over a new generation of fans as Shaggy Rogers in the live-action Scooby-Doo films. Since 2009, he has also voiced Shaggy in various animated Scooby-Doo projects. On television, he starred in the crime drama Good Girls and appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return.

The Mystery of Stu Macher’s Return

While Scream has always played fast and loose with its mythology, bringing back a supposedly dead character after nearly 30 years is a bold move. Could Stu have faked his death? Has he been pulling the strings behind Ghostface attacks for decades? Or will Scream 7 take a more supernatural or psychological approach?

No matter how the story unfolds, Lillard’s return is guaranteed to shake up the franchise. With Kevin Williamson directing for the first time and an expanded cast of new and returning stars, Scream 7 is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated horror films in years.
