Sophia Ray’s Haunting ‘Triptych’ to Premiere at Abattoir Festival
The short film Triptych, a chilling exploration of art’s darker influences, is set to screen at the Abertoir Film Festival, marking another triumph for writer-director Sophia Ray. Starring Emmanuel Imani (Wheel of Time, Geek Girl), the film weaves psychological horror, mystery, and thriller elements into a haunting tale of ambition and reckoning.

Triptych follows Margaux Kasser, a provocative art dealer with a plan to destroy a Hieronymus Bosch masterpiece as part of a performance art piece. However, as the plan unfolds, the painting reveals secrets tied to her past, and Margaux faces a reckoning she may not survive. Against the eerie backdrop of Bosch’s surreal imagery, the film examines the complex interplay of creativity, destruction, and the human condition.
Sophia Ray, known for her visually arresting work in branded content and music videos for artists like Ellie Goulding and Sigrid, has turned her focus to the darker themes of ambition and its toll. Speaking about Triptych, Ray described it as “a meditation on the sacrifices made at the altar of ambition, examining the inexorable link between creation and destruction.” Her direction aims to evoke deep questions about the cost of desire and the shadows that accompany artistic pursuits.
Co-produced by Script Compass and Academy Films, Triptych boasts a strong pedigree. Script Compass, led by BAFTA-nominated producer Byron McNally (Wren Boys, Butterfly Kisses), and Academy Films’ Medb Riordan, who recently won a BAFTA for Earth Mama, bring considerable expertise to the project. This collaboration underscores Triptych’s ambition as a short film with thematic depth and visual sophistication.

Emmanuel Imani leads the cast with a performance that captures the tension between human fragility and ambition’s monstrous potential. Known for his role in Wheel of Time, Imani continues to challenge boundaries, much like Triptych itself, which promises a visceral experience for audiences.
Premiering at a festival renowned for showcasing cutting-edge horror, Triptych looks to be a testament to the enduring allure of psychological and artistic horror, genres that continue to captivate audiences across film festivals worldwide.
