100 Pages of Horror – Apollo by Matt Fitch, Chris Baker and Mike Collins

Continuing their amazingly strong and eclectic output the fantastic publishers at SelfMadeHero’s take on the real life tale of one of humanities greatest achievements which took place many years ago way back in 1969, the Apollo mission that put a man on the moon for the first time.

Blending fact and fiction drawing from inside stories, biographies, documentaries, TV series, movies and even on board voice transcripts from NASA, writers Chris Baker and Matt Fitch paint a perfect portrait of the peril, plight and pure adventure experienced by Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins on that hugely historical flight.

Both authors have plenty of credentials in comics having collaborated together before on various projects with Chris Baker having contributed to The Fitzroy and given mind-birth to the epic Last Driver with veteran artist Shaky Kane. Matt Fitch has written or co-written a number of titles for Dead Canary Comics and penned The Frogman Trilogy, as well as performing editing duties on Baker’s Last Driver and Shaky Kane’s Street Pizza Mona Lisa among other titles.

Unpacking the urban legends, the gossip and the speculation the duo reveal a remarkable true story about life, death, dreams and the reality of humanity’s greatest exploratory achievement not just focusing on the scientific and engineering feats but also the men on the mission, their hopes and their fears and showing us both in great detail.

With flashbacks, dream sequences and some more surreal moments you get a much better insight into a journey no one can ever really imagine apart from the chosen few who have achieved what the crew of Apollo did and experienced what they felt and saw in space.

Bringing it all together is the wonderful art of Mike Collins best known these days as a storyboard artist for TV having worked on Doctor Who and Sherlock. Collins has a thirty-year track record as a comic artist and writer, including producing a critically acclaimed adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. He has worked on all the major Marvel and DC characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman which is a feat almost as amazing as flying to the moon to many comic fans!

A brilliant balance of fact and fantasy Apollo is a must have for anyone interested in the history of NASA or space travel but also any Sci-Fi comic fans looking for something a bit different to the usual dry and uninteresting retelling of such a magnificent and momentous moment.
