‘Werwulf’ to Continue Robert Eggers’ Exploration of Classic Supernatural Horror

Robert Eggers has earned himself a rather strong reputation since his debut feature film in 2015. The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu have all done well with critics and audiences, even if only his first two can make it into the bracket of great films rather than just rather good. Even so, it’s a strong record thus far.

Next, following on from the success of his remake of German horror classic Nosferatu, Eggers will be bringing another classic supernatural being back to the big screen. Werwulf is set in England, despite the Germanic name, promising to showcase the famed beast in all its glory as it terrorises a 13th-century town.

Set to release early next year, we already know a little bit about what’s to come. Given his proven aptitude for the horror genre, we can expect Werwulf to build up some worthwhile scares. On top of this, en route to release, there’s also a game being run for those who can solve the puzzles.

Hailed as a “Harrowing Tale”

Focus Features, which also presented Eggers’ last film, Nosferatu, is looking to generate yet another horror hit with Werwulf. They list the film as his “most visceral and haunting experience yet,” saying that it’ll be a “harrowing tale” that explores damnation, devotion to family, and, as should always be the case with werewolf stories, “the devil within.”

The tagline on the initial movie poster reads “devoureth all mankind.” While the poster is in black and white, and Eggers did previously say that he’d planned to shoot in black and white, the film will actually be in colour. Most likely, this is to maximise its cinematic appeal for modern audiences.

Eggers co-wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who he teamed up with for The Northman, and has said that the script features period-accurate dialogue complete with translations and annotations where helpful for the audience. Bringing the story to life will be Nosferatu collaborators Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.

Promotion Through Puzzle Games

With a release run from 25 December to 1 January, it’s not a surprise that fairly little is known about Werwulf so far. However, to keep fans engaged before it hits the big screen, the official social channels have been running a puzzle game that gets unveiled on each full moon of the month.

It’s a creative play, especially as werewolves are always beloved, but rarely the stars of major modern games. The exception would be found among the casino slots online. Werewolf If Up and Curse of the Werewolf Megaways are premium titles in this space. Both lean into the horror of the setting and the power of releasing the beast.

Beyond those, games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Skyrim, and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt all feature werewolves, but in rather secondary roles or as side factions. Not many top-tier games set your story as the werewolf from the outset, as many have with vampires. So, announcing a werewolf game-type challenge for Werwulf is certainly intriguing.

Focus Features has released an alternate reality game that poses a puzzle to fans of the upcoming release. To partake, they had to sign up on the Devoureth All Mankynde website and then have a look at the clue posted on X – which has been attached above.

There will be three clues, with each released on the full moon of the month before the initial December premiere of Werwulf. Given his track record and this commitment to some out-of-the-box marketing, Werwulf looks primed to be another Christmas horror hit for Eggers.
