Initially released in 1960, Peeping Tom faced critical hostility, negatively impacting Powell’s career and leading to the film’s suppression. However, it has since been recognised as a pivotal film in the British horror genre, with its themes of voyeurism and psychopathy influencing the slasher movie genre. Martin Scorsese, a vocal advocate for Powell’s work, played a crucial role in the film’s revival and restoration. He remarks on the film’s unique blend of art and obsession, highlighting its significance in the history of cinema.
In 2024, STUDIOCANAL will also release a 75th Anniversary 4K restoration of The Small Back Room, followed by a new edition of Oh… Rosalinda!! Both films will join Peeping Tom and The Tales of Hoffmann in STUDIOCANAL’s Vintage Classics range. These releases will feature new bonus content, including interviews with filmmaker Kevin Macdonald and Powell & Pressburger expert Ian Christie.
This restoration project was made possible by funding from The Film Foundation and STUDIOCANAL, with special thanks to Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker for their consultation. This release marks a significant moment in the preservation and appreciation of classic British cinema.
