‘The Blue Hole’ Surfaces After Decades in Development

You could say that The Blue Hole has taken a rather strange and lengthy development route. Built from footage captured across multiple decades and stitched together into a new supernatural mystery, Dave Castiglione’s long-awaited anthology is now making its debut on Blu-ray and VHS, bringing one of shot-on-video horror’s most unusual passion projects to physical media.

The Blue Hole

Phantom Pain Films has confirmed that The Blue Hole will be released through its Future Video label, with Blu-ray and VHS editions available exclusively via Future-Video.tv. The release marks the return of cult filmmaker Dave Castiglione, whose Sharkey Video productions became favourites among underground shot-on-video horror collectors during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Castiglione steps behind the camera for the first time in 17 years, revisiting material originally filmed in 1997 and again in 2010 before reshaping it into a contemporary feature. Rather than simply restoring unfinished footage, the filmmaker has constructed an entirely new story around it, connecting the separate productions through the legend of the real Blue Hole in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens.

The Blue Hole

The anthology follows a tabloid newspaper team investigating the mysterious location, only to uncover decades of unexplained events involving cryptid encounters, serial murders and vengeful zombies. As each tale unfolds, the Blue Hole itself emerges as the unsettling thread linking every terrifying discovery.

The cast brings together several familiar names from independent genre cinema, including Joel D. Wynkoop, Phil Herman, Laura Giglio and Debbie D, alongside Michelle Gibbs, Jacob Kane and Amanda Megan. It reflects Castiglione’s long association with the American shot-on-video scene, while introducing a new generation of performers into the mix.

Collectors are also being treated to an extensive selection of bonus features. The Blu-ray includes more than three hours of additional material, featuring two full-length audio commentaries, cast and crew interviews, outtakes, a look at Sharkey Video’s appearance at VHS Fest, plus restored versions of several early shorts including Last Laugh, Last Laugh 2, Spring Break at Zombie Lake and The Little World of Wilbur. Trailers and other archival material complete the package.

The Blue Hole

Castiglione first established Sharkey Video in 1994, producing and directing low-budget features including Love Is A Stranger, An Ex-Hooker’s Christmas Carol, Backwoods Marcy and Deep Undead. Known for incorporating underwater cinematography into many of his productions, he became a recognised figure within the American DIY horror movement, and The Blue Hole represents his first feature-length project since stepping away from filmmaking.

The Blue Hole is available on Blu-ray and VHS through Phantom Pain Films’ Future Video label, exclusively from Future Video. An official trailer is also available to watch now. To get your copy, visit: future-video.tv/
