Viral Horror ‘Spoiling You’ Terrifies Online Before Romford Debut

A new British horror feature is tapping into the unsettling intimacy of internet culture, with Spoiling You debuting its teaser trailer to striking early attention online. The first footage from the ASMR-inspired psychological chiller premiered exclusively with genre outlet Bloody Disgusting, where the publication’s social media post amassed more than 950,000 views within 48 hours, signalling significant appetite for the film’s unnerving premise.

Written and directed by Megan Tremethick, who co-wrote the screenplay with Lawrie Brewster, Spoiling You delves into the dark side of digital devotion. The film follows Drew, a lonely insomniac who becomes consumed by his fixation on Miss Mutter, an ASMR-style online creator whose videos offer simulated intimacy and unconditional reassurance. When Drew wins an opportunity to meet her in person, the carefully constructed fantasy he has built around her begins to fracture in disturbing ways.

Tremethick described the film’s central idea as rooted in the fragile boundary between comfort and control. She has said the creative team were interested in examining how easily solace can be confused with security, and what unfolds when that assumption is challenged.

The cast includes Laurence R. Harvey, best known for his role in The Human Centipede films, alongside Stephen Kerr. Tremethick also appears on screen, in addition to her duties behind the camera. The project was produced in collaboration with British Horror Studio, continuing the company’s focus on provocative and psychologically driven genre fare.

Rather than leaning into conventional shock tactics, Spoiling You positions itself within a contemporary digital landscape, exploring parasocial relationships and the commodification of emotional connection. The ASMR format, typically associated with calm and relaxation, becomes a vehicle for mounting unease as the film interrogates the blurred line between performance and possession.

The film will make its world premiere on Saturday 21 February at 7:00 p.m. at the Romford Horror Film Festival in London. The festival has increasingly become a platform for emerging UK horror voices, and Spoiling You arrives as one of its most talked-about new titles.
