Horror Favourites – Marko Mäkilaakso
From Finnish genre director Marko Mäkilaakso (Netflix’s Bordertown, It Came from the Desert) comes The Creeps, a wild new cult comedy paying tribute to the 1980’s!

They are cruel, chaotic, and lethally playful. Say hello to The Creeps. When a mysterious interdimensional gateway opens, a swarm of vicious little monsters pours into Vuokatti Ski Resort, turning Zach and his friends’ long-awaited getaway into a nightmare. What should have been an unforgettable break, packed with wild parties, sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll, and even an appearance from screen icon Christopher Lambert, quickly descends into bedlam as the Creeps take over. Forced to step up, Zach must confront the pint-sized menaces and discover that becoming a hero is not so far removed from the beloved ’80s films that shaped him. Bolt the doors, turn the music up loud, and brace yourself. The Creeps have arrived, and your holiday season is in their sights.

Featuring cameos from cult legends, Joe Dante (director of Gremlins and The Howling), William Daniels (Knight Rider) and Christopher Lambert (Mortal Kombat, Highlander), The Creeps is a festive, fun and joyfully gory alternative this holiday season.

We asked Marko about his love of the horror genre, and why it means so much to him.
“I love all different types of horror, based on the mood I’m in. I love everything from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween, to Bride of Frankenstein and Arachnophobia. Horror is so expressive, and at every budget level, there are great examples of well-made horror films.”
“The amazing thing about horror is that it’s one of the rare genres where you still pack out movie theatres, whether it’s newer films or old classics. Go and screen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and fans show up. That doesn’t necessarily happen with drama or comedy. Horror is such a uniting, fun genre and works so well in that shared environment. There’s also many subgenres, like the darker, more tonally serious films, or fun, wacky and goofy stuff. There’s something for every mood, horror will never go away!”

“In The Creeps, our creatures were inspired by cult classics like Gremlins, Critters and Ghoulies, but we also tip our hat to Highlander and Knight Rider, so it’s a real variety. I hope audiences have a fun time with it, and enjoy spotting the in jokes and references!”
