‘Carrie’ Season Two Confirmed as Mike Flanagan Takes Story Beyond the Prom

Prom night was never going to be the end of Carrie White’s story. Prime Video has officially renewed Mike Flanagan’s Carrie for a second season, extending its modern reworking of Stephen King’s debut novel after the first run became the platform’s number one series in more than 105 countries.

The renewal comes just over two weeks after Carrie premiered on 7 October, with all eight episodes of Season One now available to stream. Summer H. Howell will continue to lead the series as Carrie White, alongside Samantha Sloyan as her fiercely controlling mother Margaret.

Flanagan will return as showrunner and executive producer, with King also continuing as executive producer as the pair move the story beyond the events traditionally associated with Carrie’s infamous prom night.

“From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom,” said Flanagan. “I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.”

King added: “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

Prime Video says the series has connected strongly with younger viewers and international audiences, while also drawing established King fans. The first season reframes Carrie’s high-school experience for the social media era, with viral bullying and online cruelty joining the religious repression and adolescent isolation already central to King’s original story.

Howell was chosen for the title role after an extensive casting process that saw almost 1,500 actors audition. The first season also stars Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.

Recurring roles feature several familiar names from Flanagan’s previous work, including Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint and Rahul Kohli, alongside Tim Bagley and Heather Graham.

Flanagan directed the first two and final two episodes of Season One, with Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata each directing episodes in between.

The renewal also arrives shortly before another major Carrie milestone. Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of King’s novel turns 50 on 3 November, half a century after its release helped establish Carrie White as one of horror cinema’s most recognisable characters.

No production timetable or release date for Season Two has yet been announced, but Prime Video has confirmed that Flanagan and King will remain at the helm as Carrie White’s story moves into previously unexplored territory.
