Kirill Sokolov unleashed his stylish and bloodthirsty horror/comedy, Why Don’t You Just Die! at Arrow Video Frightfest 2019 receiving an abundance of critical acclaim, proving to be a festival highlight, coming at no surprise. Why Don’t You Just Die! offers a thrilling intensity through its stylish visuals, edge of the seat plotting, captivating performances and its utterly gripping, suspenseful storyline.
It’s a film that could quite easily rival Quentin Tarantino’s best work a la Pulp Fiction in terms of its narrative structure and in the way, it builds character development through exploring their pasts and their present.
Throughout the film, what we think we know about the characters and scenarios are twisted and subverted, bringing in an exciting and challenging story to follow. When it comes to Why Don’t You Just Die! spoilers should be avoided at all costs, the little that’s known about the film beforehand, the better. It needs to be viewed in all its glory, where the viewer won’t anticipate which trajectory it will take next.
Why Don’t You Just Die! is essentially a domestic thriller, the action takes place in the confines of a small apartment, which sees a “meet the parents” situation go horribly wrong. It centres around corrupt cop, Andrei (played menacingly by Vitaliy Khaev), who finds himself surrounded by a group of people with their own grudges against him to bare.
From his aggrieved daughter, long-suffering wife, a deceived colleague and a violent young man, each of them armed with a reason to want him dead, but will Andrei just die?! As the violence escalates and the surprises manifest, the film pushes the boundaries as far as it possibly can, which ensures that the audience will not leave the film disappointed.
The film is ultra-gory and doesn’t hold back on the violence in any way, shape or form. The sound design is on point, giving a heighted visceral experience that will make its viewers delightfully squirm. There’s plenty of blood splatter to satisfy gore hounds, along with realistic looking torturous moments which is a credit to the FX team.
From the garish aesthetic of the apartment to the sharp, witty dialogue and Ennio Morricone inspired score, Why Don’t You Just Die! is a riotous cinematic experience that isn’t to be missed!
Laced in dark irony and black humour, Why Don’t You Just Die! is undoubtably one of the best genre films of the year and one of the standouts of the Frightfest 2019 line-up.
