Horror Favourites – Akorede Alli

RAN MI LOWO (HELP ME) available to rent/own on DVD and digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms now so we grabed its director and producer Akorede Alli for a talk about horror.

RAN MI LOWO (HELP ME) tells the story of a female investigative journalist, Yemisi, who investigates why high school girls are unexplainably dropping out of school for no apparent reason. Rumor has it that the girls have been drugged and raped — but the school and the local authorities do nothing to investigate the cases.

When Yemisi’s best friend, Adeola becomes a victim, the young aspiring investigative journalist takes it upon herself to uncover the truth. Yemisi makes herself bait to lure the perpetrator and get her proof. Like a vampire drawn by the smell of blood, the perpetrator could not help but go after the new “prey.” Yemisi risks everything for justice and must race against time to solve the mystery by any means necessary.

Directed and produced by Akorede Alli, RAN MI LOWO (HELP ME) was co-written by Akorede Alli & Ottah Osondo. The cast features Akorede Alli (‘Tunde’), Samuel A. Perry (‘Bode’), Omowunmi Dada (‘Yemisi’), Debo Adebayo (‘Sulaiman’), Biola Adebayo (‘Adunni’), Tina Mba (‘Mrs. Adeniji’), Toyin Alausa (‘Gbemisola’s Mother’), Jide Awobona (‘Dayo’), Ayobami Ojo (‘Kemi’), Stella Kwueme (‘Bola’) and Ameena Ali (‘Gbemisola’).

“All children are blessings to a household and the world,” said filmmaker Akorede Alli. “Parents should be vigilant and equally protect their sons and daughters. No child should be neglected because their lives and futures depend on it.”

Below Akorede talks about his favorite horror film:

“The first time I saw John Carpenter’s Halloween, I had just come to America from Nigeria, and it was a fascinating experience. It made me feel that I can make movies of my own in the suspense / thriller genre. There was a quality to it that was seemingly very simple, and yet there was a clear craft that I believed I could follow and make my own. Halloween is a great horror movie, and over the years as I’ve rewatched it, the quality has been consistent with a great storyline, plotting, and the acting, and especially with Michael Myers’ character. I was inspired to make my own movie about the evil that exists in men with my film Ran Mi Lowo, which means “Help Me” in English.

Carpenter’s development of that character inspired me to create my own story about a killer who hunts young women, but in a unique setting and style that may feel different to Western audiences. I hope that I was able to generate the same kind of suspense and thrills with Ran Mi Lowo as I felt watching the original Halloween. That movie had so much suspense … every time it’s Halloween, evil returns, and only one name comes to mind: Michael Myers. With my film, I hope to also inspire filmmakers who have yet to believe that they too can make movies of their own in this genre.”
