Exclusive Interview: Matthias Hoene Talks ‘Gnomes’

If you have ever thought that decorative garden gnomes are actually terrifying, you will probably enjoy the new Australian horror comedy TV series Gnomes, which can be viewed on Stan in Australia and on Disney+ in the UK.

Gnomes

The series runs for six episodes, and it stars Asa Butterfield, the star of Hugo, Ender’s Game, Slaughterhouse Rulez, Greed, and the comedy series Sex Education, as Arnold Kipps, a police officer in a small rural town called Nompton, which gets invaded by killer gnomes. The supporting cast includes Darren Gilshenan, Megan Smart, Tess Haubrich, Alison Whyte, and Tegan Higginbotham.

As you can probably guess from a show about killer garden ornaments, Gnomes clearly does not take itself too seriously, so viewers can definitely prepare to laugh as they see killer gnomes tearing apart the residents of Nompton. Joel Kohn served as the show’s creator, with Tegan Higginbotham and Paul F. Verhoeven writing the scripts.

Most of the episodes of the first season of Gnomes were directed by Matthias Hoene, who is also known for directing Beyond the Rave, Cockneys vs Zombies, The Warrior’s Gate, and Little Bone Lodge. To learn more about the series, I conducted the following video interview with Matthias, in which we discussed everything about the making of Gnomes. Throughout the interview, Matthias is clearly very enthusiastic about the unique series, and it really does seem like Gnomes is a show which will make horror fans smile.

If you live in the UK, you can now head over to Disney+ to experience this decidedly bizarre new horror series for yourself: disneyplus.com
