John Carpenter Expands Horror Legacy With ‘Cathedral’ Release
John Carpenter is expanding his body of work beyond film with the announcement of Cathedral, his first original graphic novel, set for release on 4 August 2026 through Storm King Comics. The project marks a significant step for the filmmaker, whose career has spanned more than five decades across cinema, television and music.

Co-written by Carpenter alongside producer and Storm King Comics founder Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak, Cathedral brings together a creative team that also includes illustrators Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colourist Ryan Winn and letterer Marshall Dillon. The 120-page graphic novel will be available in bookstores, online platforms and comic shops from early August.
Set in downtown Los Angeles, the story centres on an abandoned cathedral that has long faded into the background of the city’s daily life. That changes following a violent incident which draws the attention of law enforcement. Lieutenant Christine Marks, joined by detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield, enters the building to investigate the death of her father, uncovering a concealed presence within the structure. The deeper they venture, the more the cathedral’s hidden history begins to emerge.
Carpenter, whose directing credits include Halloween, The Thing and Escape from New York, has previously contributed to a number of comic book anthologies and series through Storm King Comics, including Tales for a HalloweeNight and Asylum. However, Cathedral represents his first standalone graphic novel built from an original concept.

The release will also be accompanied by a music component, with Carpenter composing an album tied to the project. Further details on the score are expected at a later date. The filmmaker has long been associated with composing music for his own work, including the recognisable themes from several of his films.
Storm King Comics, established in 2012 by Sandy King, has developed a catalogue of horror and science fiction titles, working with creators from across film, literature and comics. The company continues to expand its publishing slate, with Cathedral positioned as a major release for 2026.
Carpenter is recently appeared at Megacon Orlando, while Storm King Comics will also be present at HorrorHound, where the project is expected to form part of ongoing promotional activity.
Cathedral will be released on 4 August 2026, with a subsequent rollout to comic shops on 5 August. Stay in touch for information by visiting: johncarpenterscathedral.com/
