‘All You Need Is Kill’ Brings Sci Fi Spectacle Back to Screens
A landmark work of modern science fiction has been reborn for cinemas, as All You Need Is Kill arrives exclusively across the UK and Ireland from 27 February 2026. Presented by Anime Limited and GKIDS, this new animated adaptation from STUDIO 4°C revisits Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s bestselling light novel with a striking visual overhaul and a renewed emotional focus.

Long regarded as one of the defining time-loop stories of the 21st century, Sakurazaka’s novel inspired global acclaim and cross-media adaptations. Now, STUDIO 4°C, the celebrated Japanese animation house behind Mind Game and Tekkonkinkreet, has crafted a fresh interpretation that centres on Rita, a young woman trapped in an endless cycle of death and resurrection.
Set in the year 20XX, the film unfolds in a Japan attempting to rebuild after the sudden appearance of a colossal alien organism known as Darol. When the structure erupts and releases monstrous entities that tear through the population, Rita is caught in the devastation and killed. Instead of oblivion, she awakens at the start of the same day. Each death resets the clock, forcing her to relive the chaos and confront the psychological toll of repetition.

As the cycle continues, Rita’s isolation deepens until she discovers that she is not alone. Keiji, a reserved young man, is also ensnared in the loop. Together, they begin to test the limits of their predicament, searching for a means to alter events and escape what feels like an inescapable fate.
Critics have been swift to praise the reimagining. Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall awarded the film five stars, describing it as the year’s first great anime feature. Dread Central called it lean, muscular science fiction, highlighting both its emotional core and kinetic action. RogerEbert.com commended the film’s craftsmanship, noting how its blend of animation styles amplifies the sense of solitude that defines Rita’s journey. Screen Anarchy pointed to the film’s set pieces as essential big-screen viewing.

The release arrives at a moment when anime features are commanding increasing box office attention worldwide. By revisiting a property that has already left an indelible mark on genre storytelling, STUDIO 4°C positions All You Need Is Kill as both a tribute and a reinvention.
The film is screening in Japanese with English subtitles as well as in a full English-language dub from 27 February 2026.
