Frozen Fear Grips ‘Snow Angel’
A snowbound descent into guilt and paranoia takes centre stage in Snow Angel, the feature debut from Canadian filmmaker Gabriel Allard, which is drawing fresh attention as it finds new audiences beyond its initial 2023 release.

Set in a remote village at the eastern tip of Quebec, the 91-minute thriller follows Mary-Jane “MJ” Morris, a former professional snowboarder whose life has been derailed by tragedy. Once at the peak of her sport, MJ is now consumed by remorse after a fatal accident that claimed the lives of people close to her best friend. Retreating to a secluded mountain chalet, she attempts to shut out the world and confront the weight of her past.
As MJ prepares to abandon the cabin and start again elsewhere, strange occurrences begin to disrupt her plans. Footsteps in the snow, unexplained noises and the creeping sense of being watched blur the line between psychological collapse and external threat. What unfolds is a tightly wound chamber piece that places its protagonist in a frozen landscape as unforgiving as her own conscience.

Catherine Bérubé leads the cast as MJ, delivering a performance that anchors the film’s escalating unease. Known to Quebec audiences for her work in television drama and internationally for roles in projects including Beau Is Afraid, Bérubé brings a measured intensity to a character grappling with isolation and self-recrimination. Olivier Renaud and Kimberly-Sue Murray feature in supporting roles, adding further layers to a story that moves between memory and present danger.
Allard, who co-wrote the screenplay with Catherine Bérubé and Damien Bérubé, uses the stark winter setting as more than backdrop. The vast stretches of white and the claustrophobic interior of the chalet become visual extensions of MJ’s fractured state of mind. Rather than relying on overt spectacle, the film builds tension through atmosphere and character, with the natural environment pressing in from all sides.

Positioned in the lineage of recent psychological chillers set against isolated terrain, Snow Angel explores the intersection of survival and accountability. As the film progresses, the question shifts from whether something is stalking MJ to whether she can escape the consequences of her own actions.
We’ll share more details on the film including release dates soon.
