‘Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants’ Finally Mutates Onto Blu-ray

Nearly four decades after it first surfaced on battered VHS tapes and late-night screenings, Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants is finally set to receive its first official Blu-ray release. The 1986 Super-8 horror oddity will arrive on 20 January 2026 as a collector’s edition from cult home entertainment label Visual Vengeance, marking a significant moment for one of regional horror’s most elusive titles.

Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants

Shot in Texas by filmmaker Matt Devlen, working alongside writer and producer Bret McCormick, Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants was created back-to-back with The Abomination, the latter of which has enjoyed a slow but steady rise in cult reputation. By contrast, Ozone has long existed in the shadow of its sister project, its reach limited by a scarce VHS release in the late 1980s and years of near-total unavailability.

The film is rooted firmly in the cultural anxieties of its era. A toxic chemical spill ruptures the ozone layer above a rural Texas town, triggering grotesque mutations among the local population. What follows is less a conventional plot than a sustained exercise in excess, with environmental panic serving as a loose framework for scenes of bodily decay, absurd humour and relentless practical effects. Environmental science student Arlene, played by Blue Thompson, and her companion Kevin move through a collapsing townscape filled with vomiting ghouls, collapsing buildings and surreal digressions that range from impromptu comedy routines to oddly timed lunch breaks.

Visually crude and defiantly repetitive, Ozone embraces a handmade aesthetic that reflects its Super-8 origins. Its pleasures lie in sheer physicality, with slime, blood and unidentified fluids coating nearly every surface. While its tone shifts away from the darker undercurrents of The Abomination in favour of broader comedy, the film’s commitment to tactile gore places it firmly within the lineage of American DIY splatter cinema.

Visual Vengeance’s release presents the most comprehensive restoration the film has ever received, sourced from original tape elements and approved by the director. The disc is loaded with newly assembled extras and archival material, including multiple commentaries, interviews with cast and crew, deleted scenes, effects outtakes and rare public access television footage. First pressing copies will also include a slipcase, a mutant-themed novelty item, a mini-comic and reversible artwork reproducing the original VHS design.

Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants

For collectors and historians of underground horror, the Blu-ray offers both preservation and context, rescuing Ozone: Attack of the Redneck Mutants from obscurity and cementing its place as a genuine artefact of regional American filmmaking excess.

Look out for this release from 20 January, from all good, retro physical media outlets.
