Frankenstein Gets a Radical Revival in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’

Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to return to familiar monstrous territory with The Bride!, a new twist on the Frankenstein myth arriving in UK and US cinemas on 6 March 2026 via Warner Bros. The film reunites Gyllenhaal with Jessie Buckley, casting her as the reanimated “bride,” and pairs her with Christian Bale in the role of a lonely Creator. Together, they spearhead what may be one of next year’s most talked?about horror releases.

The Bride! 2026

Taking place in 1930s Chicago, The Bride! sees Frankenstein (Bale) commission Dr Euphronious (Annette Bening) to build him a companion. The result is a woman brought back from death, but her existence proves far more volatile than Frankenstein or Euphronious anticipated. The awakening unleashes forces, desires and dangers no one saw coming. Among the supporting cast are Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz, lending further weight to the film’s cast.

Behind the camera Gyllenhaal is bolstered by an accomplished technical team: cinematography by Lawrence Sher, editing by Dylan Tichenor, score by Hildur Guðnadóttir, and costume design by Sandy Powell. Production design is handled by Karen Murphy and the screenplay is written by Gyllenhaal herself. The project marks her second feature as writer?director after The Lost Daughter.

The Bride! 2026

The film’s production history is as dramatic as its plot. Initially developed by Netflix, the project shifted to Warner Bros following the 2023 strikes. Financing and location disputes reportedly delayed the move, but with the backing of Warner’s leadership, the film now moves forward with a reported budget around $80 million. Sources suggest studio executives handed Gyllenhaal considerable creative control to realise her vision.

The trailer reveals gothic décor, smoky laboratories, electric drama and a darker romantic tension than most Frankenstein reimaginings dare attempt. Moments of murder, possession and intense atmosphere hint that The Bride! intends to merge horror with period filmmaking on a grand scale.

The film is now firmly on the radar for film fans and looks to be one of the bigger releases in 2026. Watch the trailer below.
