Monsters, Melodrama and Matrimony in ‘The Shape of Water’ Live Experience
Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning fantasy The Shape of Water is getting a flamboyant and fantastical new lease of life this October, as Bournemouth’s Cottonwood Boutique Hotel transforms into a haunt of gothic romance, surreal cabaret, and immersive horror. Billed as The Monster Wedding, the event promises a wild night of emotion, myth and spectacle on 4 October, backed by Screams By The Sea, PESTS, and the British Film Institute as part of its Too Much: Melodrama film season.

The evening begins with a screening of The Shape of Water, del Toro’s celebrated tale of otherness, tenderness and the transcendence of love across species lines. With its Cold War paranoia and poetic embrace of the monstrous, the film will be introduced by Screams By The Sea curators, who also present a selection of short films setting the tone for what follows.
But this isn’t just cinema. After the screening, the Cottonwood opens up like a haunted storybook, inviting guests to roam its eerie halls. From 8pm, cabaret performers take to the stage in the hotel’s faded ballroom, before the audience is set loose to discover hidden performances, art installations, and interactive workshops scattered across its rooms. The night concludes with a final round of cabaret in a closing celebration of the extravagant, the grotesque, and the tenderly bizarre.
Costumes are encouraged, with guests invited to don gothic glamour, period garb or monstrous elegance for a night that promises as much theatricality as it does thematic weight. This isn’t merely a film event, but an immersive celebration of melodrama as spectacle, drawing on the emotional grandeur of the medium and the eccentricity of its biggest moods.

Delivered under the BFI’s Too Much: Melodrama on Film banner, the event aligns with the season’s commitment to honouring cinema that revels in heightened emotion and aesthetic excess. Del Toro’s film, with its deep hues, sweeping score and unapologetic romanticism, fits the bill perfectly.
Screams By The Sea and PESTS, the creative powerhouses behind the evening, have carved a name for themselves in championing fringe cinema and performance across Bournemouth. This event cements their status as cultural disruptors keen on dismantling the wall between audience and experience.
