FrightFest Delves Into the Mystery of ‘Where Is Juan Moctezuma?’

Few figures in genre cinema are as cloaked in speculation as Juan F. Moctezuma II, a name that has long drifted through the shadows of Mexican horror history. His films from the 1970s are rumoured to have influenced Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi, yet the man himself has remained an enigma. This month, Where Is Juan Moctezuma? will premiere at FrightFest London 2025, screening on Sunday 24 August at 8:40 p.m. in Discovery Screen Two at the ODEON Luxe West End, and is set to reopen the debate about whether the elusive filmmaker ever truly existed.

Where Is Juan Moctezuma? Alaric Rocha

According to decades-old accounts, Moctezuma’s career reached its peak with 1000 Paths of Death, his first Hollywood production under Roger Corman. The project was reportedly filmed in complete secrecy before vanishing along with its director. One theory claims the work was sabotaged by his nemesis, the legendary luchador El Escorpión, a feud that, if true, was said to span years and multiple productions.

The new film traces what is believed to be Moctezuma’s journey through Mexico’s bustling exploitation film scene, blending rare footage attributed to him with interviews from those who claim to have worked with, met, or been inspired by the man. Director Arturo Ripstein, producer Brian Yuzna, and WWE Champion Paul London contribute recollections and reflections, though how much of their testimony is drawn from fact and how much from folklore is left tantalisingly open to interpretation.

Several films credited to Moctezuma have appeared in recent years on streaming platforms, including the anthology Love, Blood & Aztec Demons. Whether these works are authentic relics of a long-lost career or modern recreations made in his style remains a subject of debate among genre scholars.

Where Is Juan Moctezuma? offers no definitive answers, instead presenting the fragments of a career that may have been, and inviting audiences to draw their own conclusions. As the screening approaches, one thing is certain – the mystery of Juan F. Moctezuma II will continue to cast its shadow over the world of horror cinema. Let’s hope watching this FrightFest feature will help shine a light on what lies behind the legend.
