Retro Slasher Fun Comes Home with ‘Hell of a Summer’

A fresh spin on slasher comedy has landed on digital platforms this week as Hell of a Summer becomes available to buy or rent in the UK. Set against the woodsmoke and sing-songs of a remote retreat, the film makes a brisk entrance with darkly comic twists that hark back to 1980s horror classics.

Hell of a Summer

Fred Hechinger takes centre stage as Jason Hochberg, a 24-year-old camp counsellor determined to survive another season at Camp Pineway—and to finally earn the respect of the teenage staff he supervises. His biggest concern is fitting in around the bonfire, until a masked killer turns the cabins into a blood-soaked obstacle course.

Conceived and brought to life by Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard in their feature directing debut, Hell of a Summer balances gore with a knowing wink. The script teases familiar genre beats—late-night dares, creaking floorboards and ominous warnings that go unheeded—while weaving in sharp humour about age, responsibility and the peculiar pressures of guiding adolescents through archery and arts and crafts.

Wolfhard, best known for his performances in Stranger Things and It, steps behind the camera alongside Bryk, whose acting credits include When You Finish Saving the World. Their creative partnership extends to the producer’s chair, joined by Michael Costigan, Jay Van Hoy and Hechinger himself. The cast also features D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Abby Quinn and Adam Pally, each carving out a memorable turn among the pines.

What sets Hell of a Summer apart is its playful collision of nostalgia and invention. The film’s visual style nods to the polished simplicity of ‘80s slashers but embraces rapid editing and inventive camera moves that keep modern audiences off balance. A secluded lake and tangle of forest trails replace suburban streets and moonlit parking lots, yet the underlying tension remains the same: youth colliding with a merciless threat at the dead end of a gravel track.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has rolled out Hell of a Summer across major digital outlets including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Sky Store. The release offers a chance for home viewers to catch up on a title that earned festival buzz earlier this year, and to appreciate Wolfhard and Bryk’s affectionate yet fearless approach to horror comedy.

For those who fancy popcorn-ready chills without booking a cinema seat, Hell of a Summer delivers a weekend-long frisson in the comfort of your living room.
