Ryan Gosling to Bring Killer Klowns Back from the Void
After decades of false starts, fan-fuelled nostalgia, and more merchandise than movie updates, Killer Klowns from Outer Space may finally be gearing up for a return, this time with Ryan Gosling reportedly involved as producer for a high-profile reboot at Amazon MGM Studios.

The surprise report, broken by insider Jeff Sneider, suggests that Gosling is backing a remake of the 1988 cult classic horror-comedy that saw extraterrestrial clowns descend from the cosmos in a giant circus tent spaceship to wreak havoc on a sleepy American town. With popcorn guns, cotton candy cocoons, acid pies, and balloon-animal bloodshed, the original film delivered a blend of slapstick humour and outlandish horror that has only grown in popularity since its modest theatrical debut.
The film was created, written and directed by the Chiodo Brothers, who for years have tried – and failed – to bring the Klowns back to life through sequels, 3D reboots, and even a proposed SYFY Original. Now, with Amazon owning the rights via its 2022 acquisition of MGM, it seems the long-stalled circus may be back in business.
No official statements have been made by Gosling or Amazon at the time of writing, but the involvement of the Barbie and Drive star adds a high-wattage twist to the project. If confirmed, Gosling’s role as producer could be the push the franchise has long needed, especially given his recent moves into genre-driven projects and passion for subversive material.

Stephen Chiodo, speaking in past interviews, has been candid about Hollywood’s indifference to cult horror: “We have been trying to get the sequel going since 1988. Hollywood is just a horrible machine. The film didn’t really get much box office… and when you want to get a sequel done, they look at the box office. They don’t regard cult films as something to invest in.”
Despite those hurdles, the Klowns have managed to stay visible thanks to consistent waves of merchandise, their frequent presence in Halloween displays, and a recent video game adaptation that introduced them to a new generation of horror fans.
The Chiodos themselves previously laid out an ambitious multi-project concept involving a “trilogy in four parts,” which would pick up years after the original film, following the lives of survivors still haunted by the invasion. Grant Cramer, who played Mike Tobacco in the original, was even attached to reprise his role as a now-discredited town drunk in earlier sequel pitches.
Whether this new incarnation sticks closer to reboot or reimagining remains to be seen. The original’s unique tone – a fever dream of carnival chaos, practical effects, and straight-faced absurdity – will be difficult to replicate, but with Amazon’s deep pockets and Gosling’s influence, Killer Klowns from Outer Space may finally receive the return it’s long been teased.

Further details, including director, cast, or projected release window, have yet to be confirmed.
For now, horror fans can keep their clown noses polished and ears open, the big top might be landing again soon. We’ll share more info as it comes.
