Meet ‘Cara’: The Psychological Horror That Will Leave You Reeling
Hayden Hewitt’s harrowing psychological horror Cara will arrive on UK digital platforms on 17 February 2025, courtesy of Reel 2 Reel Films. Following its world premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024, this raw and unrelenting debut feature has garnered critical attention for its intense portrayal of trauma, mental health, and survival.

Elle O’Hara delivers a standout performance as the titular Cara, a woman haunted by the abuse she endured in a psychiatric hospital. Determined never to return to the institution, Cara devises a desperate plan to escape the grasp of her past and the sinister forces she believes are conspiring against her. As she spirals deeper into paranoia and despair, Cara’s actions lead to shocking and violent consequences, challenging audiences to grapple with the murky moral complexities of her journey.
The film’s cast includes notable talent such as James Dreyfus (House of the Dragon), Laurence R. Harvey (The Human Centipede 2), Michaela Longden (Book of Monsters), Julie Hannan (Supernova), and Johnny Vivash (How to Kill Monsters). Together, they form a deeply unsettling web of relationships that push the story into ever darker territory.
Hewitt, co-founder of the infamous shock site LiveLeak, brings a distinct edge to his filmmaking, crafting a story that refuses to shy away from uncomfortable truths. With stark colour grading and disorienting visual cues, Hewitt immerses the audience in Cara’s fractured psyche, blurring the lines between reality and delusion.

Our writer, Erica covered it at FrightFest 2024 and praised the film’s willingness to dive into the raw depths of human suffering, with its exploration of misogyny, mental illness, and societal indifference. She also described it as being both unrelenting and thought-provoking. The film is neither a traditional revenge thriller nor a preachy morality tale, but a bleak and chaotic descent into one woman’s struggle to reclaim agency in a world that has left her broken.
Special effects and immersive performances elevate Cara into a standout entry in the psychological horror genre.
Available for digital download and rental from 17 February 2025, Cara promises to be a challenging yet rewarding experience for those willing to confront its unflinching vision of human tragedy and survival.
