Joel Kinnaman Leads the Fight for Survival in ‘The Silent Hour’
The action thriller The Silent Hour, directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist, The Call), is poised to make waves with its blend of suspense, emotional depth, and groundbreaking representation of deaf characters. Starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Suicide Squad), Sandra Mae Frank (New Amsterdam), Mekhi Phifer (Divergent), and Mark Strong (Kingsman), the film follows Boston Detective Frank Shaw (Kinnaman) and Ava Fremont (Frank) as they fight for survival against a group of killers in a near-condemned apartment building.

After an on-the-job injury leaves Shaw with significant hearing loss, he returns to the force with a new perspective but faces an unprecedented challenge. When Ava, a deaf witness to a brutal gang murder, finds herself targeted, Shaw must protect her while contending with his own hearing impairment. Trapped in an isolated apartment block, the duo must rely on each other’s unique strengths to outsmart the relentless criminals hunting them.
At its core, The Silent Hour explores resilience and connection under extraordinary circumstances. “This is a story about survival and rediscovery,” said screenwriter Dan Hall, who was inspired by a real-life NYPD officer who successfully fought for his right to serve with hearing aids. Hall noted that the film delves into the evolving relationship between Shaw and Ava, showing how their respective challenges bring them closer as they navigate life-threatening obstacles.
Sandra Mae Frank’s portrayal of Ava brings authenticity to the role, and her chemistry with Kinnaman adds a heartfelt layer to the high-stakes action. Frank praised the film’s commitment to representing deaf culture, noting how Ava’s character goes beyond her hearing loss. “It’s about who Ava is and her relationship with Frank,” she said. “This role truly highlights different facets of the deaf experience in a way we rarely see.”

Anderson’s direction heightens the tension, utilising innovative sound design to immerse viewers in Shaw’s experience of the world. His thoughtful approach creates moments of nerve-wracking suspense, such as a key scene involving an elevator’s call button, where silence becomes the ultimate source of danger. Combined with Kinnaman’s meticulous performance, the film’s soundscapes add an extra dimension to the thrilling premise.
For fans of gripping action thrillers, The Silent Hour offers a compelling twist on the genre, and is worth checking out. Stream it on Prime from 27th November.
