Jared Harris Stars in Haunting New Thriller ‘Reawakening’

Signature Entertainment has released the official UK trailer for Reawakening, the latest British psychological thriller from BAFTA-nominated writer-director Virginia Gilbert. Set to launch on digital platforms on 18th November, the film stars Jared Harris, Juliet Stevenson, and Erin Doherty in a haunting story that explores the devastating effects of grief and the complexities of familial bonds strained by tragedy.

Reawakening follows John (Harris) and Mary (Stevenson), a couple whose lives have been consumed by grief since their daughter, Clare, vanished without a trace a decade earlier. When Clare (Doherty) suddenly reappears, Mary is overcome with relief and joy, eager to reconnect with the daughter she thought she had lost forever. But John remains sceptical, suspecting that the young woman who has returned is not their Clare. As the couple’s opposing emotions clash, the story delves into a dark mystery, testing the limits of love, memory, and trust.

Virginia Gilbert’s direction pulls viewers into an intense journey, balancing suspense with deep emotional resonance. In her director’s statement, Gilbert expressed that the film was born out of her interest in human resilience and the struggle to find meaning in tragedy. She describes Reawakening as a story that “plays with ideas of memory, grief, guilt, wish-fulfilment and love.” Gilbert’s exploration of how people cope with loss – and the desperation to hold onto hope – adds complexity to the suspenseful story, challenging audiences to question what they would do in the face of unimaginable loss.

Reawakening benefits from the performances of its talented cast. Jared Harris, known for his powerful roles in Chernobyl and Mad Men, brings a raw intensity to John, a father who struggles to balance hope with suspicion. Juliet Stevenson’s portrayal of Mary adds a heartbreaking contrast, capturing the relief and optimism of a mother determined to believe that her daughter has finally returned. Erin Doherty, recognised for her role in The Crown, is captivating as Clare, the young woman whose identity remains ambiguous, keeping audiences on edge throughout.

Shot across London locations, Reawakening is enriched by the work of cinematographer Giles Harvey, whose visuals create an unsettling atmosphere, complemented by Torquil Munro’s haunting score. Together, they build a world that underscores the emotional tension and psychological twists that define the film. Aimee Meek’s production design and Holly Smart’s costumes further shape the setting, allowing each detail to echo the turmoil within the characters.
