‘Wolves’ Stalks the Line Between Truth and Horror

Danny Dunlop’s Wolves, an eerie psychological thriller inspired by true events, is poised to make an impact on audiences with its unsettling exploration of the thin line between victim and perpetrator. The film, starring Mark Nocent, Jake Raymond, and Allan Dobrescu, captures the journey of a young recluse who inadvertently stumbles onto a string of unsolved cold cases, only to find himself spiralling deeper into society’s dark underbelly.

Drawing inspiration from a real-life series of unsolved animal deaths in Dunlop’s hometown of London, Ontario, the film’s plot channels a sense of impending dread and unease. These animal deaths were widely considered a public emergency, as experts warned that such recurring violence against animals is often a precursor to more dangerous behaviour, including human killings. It’s this chilling idea that Dunlop has brought to life, taking the audience on a ride filled with psychological tension, unease, and mounting fear.

Mark Nocent plays an unnamed recluse, whose lonely and directionless existence takes a dark turn when he learns of a series of animal killings on the news. The real shock for him comes when police identify the perpetrator as likely fitting his own profile—a terrifying realisation that propels him into an obsessive investigation to uncover the truth. Nocent’s portrayal has earned acclaim, with critics pointing out his ability to channel the fragile balance between vulnerability and darkness, lending a palpable tension to every scene.

As our protagonist delves further, the line between his investigation and his own sense of reality begins to blur. Dunlop captures this disintegration expertly, using static shots, slow pans, and disorienting jump-cuts to mirror the protagonist’s unraveling state of mind. The cinematography, awash in muted greys and blacks, evokes a sense of cold detachment, underscoring the character’s isolation and the growing threat that lurks in his psyche.

Critics have reacted to Wolves with mixed sentiments, but all agree on its atmospheric power. Alex Saveliev of Film Threat praised Dunlop’s prowess in creating a “twisted world” that lures viewers in with its contemplative pacing and stylistic choices. He described Wolves as a film immersed in an eerie visual palette that perfectly matches its brooding themes. However, Brian Fanelli of Horror Buzz noted that while the film is an intriguing character study, it sometimes drags, particularly during the protagonist’s moments of solitude, which could feel repetitive. Despite this, Fanelli commended Dunlop for making excellent use of the bleak settings to reinforce the coldness within the protagonist’s life—a deliberate decision that adds depth to the story’s haunting undertones.

Wolves also saw success on the festival circuit, premiering at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in April 2022 before making its way to the Regina International Film Festival. The film garnered a nomination for the John Dunning Best First Feature Award at the 11th Canadian Screen Awards in 2023, a testament to Dunlop’s distinctive vision and the film’s impact.

Dunlop, who served as the writer, director, producer, cinematographer, editor, and co-composer of the score, has delivered a work that reflects his passion and dedication to every aspect of filmmaking. His attention to detail—whether in the bleak, atmospheric shots of the protagonist jogging by a river or the chilling sparsity of his apartment—makes Wolves an experience that seeps into your bones.

Fans of psychological thrillers that probe the human condition will find Wolves a gripping watch. The film is available to watch now on all good streaming platforms, including Tubi, Google Play, AppleTV and YouTube.
