‘Beezel’ Brings Cursed House Terror to Grimmfest and Beyond

The unsettling new horror Beezel is set to make its International premiere at Grimmfest on 3rd October, promising audiences a chilling journey through decades of sinister secrets. From the studio that delivered the cult favourite Terrifier, Beezel offers a deeply unsettling experience that explores the eerie history of a cursed New England home and the malevolent witch lurking beneath its floors.

Directed by Aaron Fradkin and co-written by Victoria Fratz—known for their viral success with Social House Films (Val)—Beezel unravels over six tumultuous decades, each of which delves into increasingly darker territory as different generations of one family face the insatiable evil hidden beneath their home. The film tells its creepy chronicle through a series of linked vignettes, using varied types of “found footage” formats. From Super-8 to VHS and the HD digital camera of a mobile phone, each vignette not only represents the passage of time but also captures the evolution in how people record and interact with their surroundings.

What makes Beezel stand out is its disorienting use of multiple formats, each offering a fragmented and unreliable glimpse of the house’s dark influence. The result is a shifting and enigmatic horror experience—viewers are not only faced with supernatural terror but also with the notion that truth is elusive, distorted by time and the mediums used to record it. Aaron Fradkin, who previously impressed audiences with his satirical spin on horror with Val, takes a distinctly different approach here, offering a story that is as slippery and complex as the haunted house at its centre.

The film begins with three unwitting guests stumbling upon the home’s sinister secret—a witch dwelling beneath the floorboards, an ancient entity with an unquenchable thirst for the souls of the living. As the vignettes unfold, each reveals how this malevolence has infiltrated and affected generations of the same family, slowly but surely accumulating evidence of the evil that persists. The audience is given fleeting glimpses, never quite enough to fully understand but more than enough to fear.

With Beezel, Fradkin has crafted an experience that is not only a supernatural horror but also a reflection on how storytelling and memory change over time. By presenting the horror through unreliable recording devices and multiple perspectives, the film builds a tension that is unnervingly personal, forcing viewers to question what they see, what they know, and what remains hidden beneath the surface. The interlinked stories, ranging from personal tapes to modern-day recordings, create a narrative that is equal parts fragmented and cohesive, presenting a nightmarish puzzle that slowly reveals itself.

The movie’s structure—composed of narratively linked vignettes—draws from the tradition of classic anthology horror while introducing an innovative twist with its found-footage storytelling.
