Grimmfest Hosts ‘Dead Mail’ Northern UK Debut

The dark and atmospheric thriller Dead Mail is set to make its Northern UK debut at Grimmfest, Manchester’s renowned festival for genre cinema. Directed by Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy, the 1980s-set film takes viewers on a gripping journey through a Midwest post office where a simple blood-stained note triggers a chain of violent and unexpected events. The screening will take place at the Odeon Great Northern on 3rd October, as part of Grimmfest’s 2024 line-up, showcasing the best in new horror and thriller films from around the world.

Dead Mail follows Jasper, a seasoned dead letter investigator, whose job involves tracing and returning lost mail to its sender. When a cryptic and bloody plea for help lands on his desk, Jasper is drawn into a chilling mystery that takes him to Trent, an unassuming yet strange resident of the men’s home where Jasper lives. What begins as a routine investigation turns into a desperate, dangerous game as Trent shows an obsessive interest in the letter, leading to violent consequences.

Co-directors DeBoer and McConaghy were inspired by real-life dead letter offices and the eerie world of undelivered mail. Speaking about their inspiration, they said, “We were fascinated by the backdrop of a now-defunct department that used primitive technology to return undeliverable valuables to their intended recipients. That world, combined with the concept of someone going to extreme lengths to hold onto personal stability, created the foundation for Dead Mail.”

They also spoke about how the film reflects deeper themes of human connection and isolation. “As one of our characters says in the film, ‘If you’re lonely enough, you’ll open your mind to just about anything.’ It’s a story about Trent, a deeply troubled man grasping to maintain the first human connection he’s stumbled upon in years. Dead Mail digs into the complex brokenness of loneliness.”

Sterling Macer Jr. stars as Josh, the film’s protagonist, a synthesizer engineer caught in a world of outdated technology, fighting to stay relevant. Macer, a veteran of film and television (Where the Crawdads Sing, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story), delivers a compelling performance as a man unravelled by the secrets hidden in the mysterious letter.

John Fleck, known for his roles in True Blood, Seinfeld, and his avant-garde performance art, plays Trent, a deeply troubled and obsessive man who will stop at nothing to retrieve the ominous note. Fleck’s portrayal of Trent adds layers of complexity to the film, drawing viewers deeper into its unsettling atmosphere.

Grimmfest’s 2024 programme will also feature premieres of other chilling titles, alongside a variety of live events, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and special guest appearances. The festival, which runs from 3rd to 6th October, has become a must-attend for fans of horror, fantasy, and thriller films, and Dead Mail promises to be a festival highlight.
