Gothic Horror ‘Broken Bird’ Set for UK Cinema Release

Even more exciting Pigeon Shrine FrightFest news… Catalyst Studios has announced the UK cinema release of their eagerly awaited gothic horror film, Broken Bird. The film, which will celebrate its world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London, is set to open this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest on 30th August 2024.
Broken Bird marks the feature directorial debut of Joanne Mitchell, a seasoned horror storyteller with nearly 15 years of experience in the genre. The film is an adaptation of Mitchell and Tracey Sheals’s 2018 award-winning short, Sybil, with the screenplay penned by Dominic Brunt. This haunting tale delves deep into the psyche of Sybil Chamberlain, a character whose life is a tapestry of sorrow, isolation, and dark fascination.
Sybil Chamberlain, portrayed by Rebecca Calder (Kandahar, Memory), is a quiet, creative individual with a peculiar set of hobbies—taxidermy and poetry. Her days are spent working at a funeral parlour, surrounded by the deceased, whom she finds more understanding than the living. Sybil’s life took a tragic turn at the tender age of ten when a horrific accident claimed the lives of her beloved family. Since then, she has lived in an aching loneliness, finding solace in her art and vivid imagination.

As reality and reason begin to slip away, Sybil’s dark desires grow more insatiable, leading her down a twisted path where her fascination with the dead takes on a grotesque new dimension. In a chilling climax of gothic horror, Sybil discovers a macabre form of happiness and contentment with her unusual companions—the dead.
Rebecca Calder delivers a masterful performance as Sybil, capturing the character’s unsettling quirks and depth of emotion. She is supported by an exceptional cast including James Fleet (Four Weddings & a Funeral), Sacharissa Claxton (Avenue 5), and Jay Taylor (Misfits), each bringing a unique presence to this disturbing narrative.
Joanne Mitchell expressed her excitement about the film’s premiere and release: “I’m thrilled for audiences to experience Broken Bird. It’s a project that has been close to my heart, and bringing Sybil’s story from script to screen has been an incredible journey. The film blends gothic horror with deep psychological elements, making it a unique addition to the genre.”

Catalyst Studios’ production of Broken Bird is supported by producers Zoe Stewart, Mark Pennell, Holly Anderson Levow, and Paul Kampf, who have worked tirelessly to bring this dark vision to life.
The film’s premiere at FrightFest is a significant milestone, positioning Broken Bird at the forefront of the horror community’s most anticipated events. FrightFest, known for showcasing the best in horror cinema, provides an ideal platform for the film’s debut.
Following its premiere, Broken Bird will be released in UK cinemas from 30th August, offering audiences nationwide the chance to immerse themselves in this haunting tale.
