Grimmfest Shares First Titles for 2024 Line-Up

Grimmfest, Manchester’s renowned International Festival of Fantastic Film, has officially announced the first wave of titles for its 2024 edition. Scheduled to return to The Odeon Great Northern from October 3rd to 6th, the festival promises four days of exhilarating, genre-defining cinema.

Although the full programme of features, shorts, special guests, and related events is yet to be disclosed, the initial selection teases an eclectic mix of horror and fantastical narratives that will surely whet the appetites of attendees.

Festival Director, Simeon Halligan, expressed his excitement, stating, “That’s just a taster of the incredible movie premieres we are lining up for Grimmfest 2024. We don’t want to give too much away at this stage and there is still a whole body of premieres to be announced in late Summer. We can’t wait to reveal more amazing movie exclusives for Grimmfest fans, over the coming months, keep your eyes peeled for further news!”

From Darkness by Philip W. de Silva will have its Northern UK Premiere at the festival. This film is a gripping fusion of Scandi-noir, Swedish mythology, and supernatural elements. It follows a park ranger and her former partner as they navigate a perilous nature reserve in search of a missing woman. The film explores themes of guilt, emotional trauma, and fear of the unknown, set against a backdrop of local legend and treacherous landscapes.

Another highlight is the International Premiere of Kill Her by Robyn August. This satiric slasher film turns a weekend hen party into a bloody nightmare, where underlying tensions explode into violence. With its spectacular practical effects and a standout performance by M.C. Huff, the film pays homage to classic 80s slashers while injecting fresh energy into the genre.

Aaron Fradkin, known for his work on Val, returns to Grimmfest with Beezel, which also has its International Premiere. The film chronicles the sinister history of a suburban New England house over fifty years through interlinked vignettes. These stories reveal the malevolent influence of an ancient evil on multiple generations of a family, blending various formats to depict the passage of time and overlapping experiences.

Federico Zampaglione’s The Well will make its English Premiere, starring Lauren Lavera of Terrifier 2 fame. The film is a full-blooded homage to Italian Gothic horror, featuring an art restorer who uncovers demonic secrets in a Baroness’s cellar. The film’s stylistic nods to Argento, Fulci, and Farina are evident in its visual and narrative execution, promising a visually stunning and terrifying experience.

Lastly, Grimmfest will host the International Premiere of Amsterdam Alert by Loïs Dols de Jong. This film delivers a harrowing, cinema verité portrayal of Amsterdam facing the imminent threat of a nuclear strike. The film is said to deliver suffocating tension and emotional intensity, offering a stark reflection on survival instincts in extreme circumstances, making it particularly resonant in today’s global political climate.
